How will the Turbo Maverick affect UTV racing?

Cory is 100% spot on! If you single out a manufacture or model because it might have an advantage in one area vs the other manufactures, then you are essentially going to be splitting the classes up to make a place for everyone. If the decision is to split and make new classes. I can assure you this will be the beginning of the end in regards to the growth & popularity of the UTV class. Many classes have been ruined over the year because of things like this.

If anything the Turbo Maverick should be allowed to race in the Pro Production class as it is a production model and meets the current rules. Lets see in a year or two if there is really any advantage to the Turbo. If the 3 or 4 Can Am teams are really putting a beating on the Polaris, Arctic Cat or whoever joins the UTV performance market, then a possible rule or class change might be warranted. But by this time the other manufactures might have there own "gimmick" and this Turbo might be a mute point.

(Something to think about)

Competition is not only good for the sport, but it's what feeds and keep the class alive. This turbo might be what Polaris needs to stay alive in our sport!

Your asking how does Can Am's Turbo help Polaris?

Its a Fact a manufacture is only apart of a sport if they can show it is making the business money. If the Board of Directors at Polaris no longer see a Return On Investment, or feel they no longer have anything to prove in desert racing, they will pull from the sport and invest their money somewhere else.

You dont think it can happen?

Ask Factory Honda, why they are no longer racing in the desert? Johnny Campbell (JCR) took the factory Honda Desert team and made the switch to the GNCC series. Why? Because Honda no longer felt is was relevant for them as a company to be involved in Baja or U.S desert racing. They no longer had anything to prove. No other manufacture had a full "Works" team, and without the competition Honda did not see a ROI.

Back in the 80's & 90's you had BFG, Goodyear, Bridgstone, Firestone, General Tire, Yokohama, Sand Blaster and several more tires in the sport and there was a reason to be here. By the year 2000 most tire manufactures had quit supporting desert racing, but BFG stuck around.

BFG tires had always helped Score foot the bill to marking the courses, helped with timing, and supported Weatherman & Score Ops with communication. Gave dozens of teams full sponsorship. Anyone else who wanted to run BFG tires, were offered a racer program which reduced the cost of tires, immensely. Anyone who ran BFG tires got free pit support the full length of the course.

Then around 2003-05 BFG was shrinking the off-road dept & budget. And there was talk about BFG's parent company Michelin pulling the plug on the whole operation. The reason was none of the other big tire manufactures were supporting then series and their was nothing to prove. When Yokohama came back, when Toyo entered, when General Tire returned it was an infusion in the sport and gave the BFG off-road division a reason to be here. They had to start losing to the other manufactures, for corporate to see they needed to be here.

Bottom line is if Polaris does not have competition, and if they dont lose once in awhile they will not see the ROI and they will pull the plug on their support. This is why I feel its important that teams like Mark Barnett & the Monster Mav need to win the Score Championship. We need to see Can Am & Arctic Cat step up and beet Polaris in BITD too. Any time you have dominance the only one who wins is the winning team. And even that will hurt that team in the long run.

From what I have read is that it does not fit in the current (PRO UTV) rules because of the Turbo. It is factory based which is the bulk and spirit of the class. No one can dispute that, and in my opinion that is the stronest argument made is that it is factory. But it does break one very definitive rule and that is that it is NOT naturally aspirated.

At what time do we see a Racer, with some form of Manufacture support stepping down from running the class and let a non partisan person or group run tech and be the voice in regards to rules, and dealing directly with the promoters?

IMO it is a huge conflict of interest to have a current racer running tech inspection, overseeing the rules and being the primary voice as to which the Race Promoter is listening too.

Once again this is not a dig on Cory as he has done nothing wrong as to the best of my knowledge. But I can see it being a huge problem in the future.

If factory engines are over 1000cc the vehicle is classified as a car and required to have windshields, wipers, turn signals etc....) So if I'm correct we will not see UTV's with engines over 1000cc. so back to my thought, the new Maverick Turbo is 121hp. If another manufacture i.e. Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Arctic Cat, Polaris etc... were to release a UTV with a 121hp that did not have a turbo would we be discussing what class to put it in? Would we feel that that big of a hp jump warrants the UTV to be in a different class? Should we require racers with after market built engines that have a certain amount of hp be required to race in a different class? Since the beginning the "Pro Production" class has been designed to be just that, a production based race UTV. Is it time to require all UTV's to race with stock engines and only allow a 5hp spread? There are so many ways we could go with this. Should how the factories make hp be the deciding factor on what class the UTV races in? Over the years many UTV's by several factories have been released with 1 or more components that could be seen as a "unfair advantage" to the previous built UTV's. I believe that racing has driven the manufactures to produce
better "sport UTV's". I was told that the RZR would not have been produced had it not been for the creation of UTV racing. I'm sure we will see manufactures continue to produce more powerful UTV's and this will continue to build the "Pro Production" class. No body was to go Slower! In the future we could see direct injection, sequential transmissions, superchargers, etc... do we make a "production" class for all these different components? I feel the "Pro Production" class has continued to grow and is as big as it is, is because over the years we have stuck to the original "spirt of the class" a Production based race UTV. Ok so thats my thought. A decision will be made by the middle of October on which class the Maverick Turbo will race in and I will keep you all informed. Being that I am a Rule Book reader, and I read everything and even try to read what is not there. (Grey Area) I dont see anywhere in the UTV Pro Class engine rules that states the engine must be "Naturally Aspirated".

Only in BITD under the general SCR33 does it list all the classes that can run Turbochargers, and I agree the 1900 class is not listed.

We do agree that both Score & BITD are running the Same UTV rules package. Both sets of rules do state that OEM engines must be used and that the vehicle & engine must be readily available to the general public.

Here is what Score says in regards to the UTV engine rules.

lets look at this way what if the 800cc rule was still there were would the sport be. Second look at Loors what would of happen if SR1 would of never been allowed would the manufactures still be there. I know joey this has nothing to do with turbo's but if you didn't keep the manufacter in there would they not push to be there. Ex LOORS SR1 not there any more.

With all being said, it makes sense that the turbo Mav should be allowed to race the Pro Production class. I don't see there being a competitive advantage at this point and soon enough Polaris and others will be offering a factory turbo.
I haven't heard anyone excited to build a turbo Mav to race, but on the contrary stick with a built NA motor that has more power anyway and is perhaps more reliable.

Just have to change the rule to allow factory installed turbos. Turbos are where the industry is going, so it's better for the manufacturers, fans and UTV racing to be inclusive while not fracturing the class.

hmmmmmm.... well I would say if we would have never added larger classes to accept the bigger cc engines then someone would have created a series that would have and thats where the racers would have gone. The problem with that argument is the fact that vehicles weren't just getting bigger cc engines they were getting better suspensions also. They were better machines all the way around. There is a difference in progression of a class and the adapting of a class to compensate for one specific type of vehicle.

The sport grew as a whole beyond 800cc. As I am sure it will do with Turbos. But we created a new class for those larger cc engines, we didn't just say oh well you have a 1000 so you race in 800 anyway... I mean, maybe there were some temporary exemptions made but as a whole a NEW class was created to accept them.

As for the SR1, it had nothing to do with the demise of UTV racing in the big series at LOORRS. If anything, SR1 preserved it for a bit. WE as a class outraced ourselves from the class because of the limitations of the factory CCs and our desire to go faster thuis spending wayyyy to much money to do so. If you didn't have a $10K + engine package in your UTV don't even bother showing up... that was only sustained for so long by Venbeekum, Funco, RJ Anderson, Kimbrell, etc... everyone else played for 4th place hoping for one of the fast guys to break.

SR1 gave guys with Rhino's an option to get back out there and have some fun. Weller made that attainable and the SR1 has sustained itself as a class. But SR1 had nothing to do with us losing UTVs at LOORRS. If we had the RZR 1000 back then we would still be in the big show. Look at the numbers today at the Regionals. Then again, I doubt 50% or more of the current UTV racers would spend the money it costs to race LOORRS at the national level. Entry, pit costs, crew, travel, etc is not to be overlooked. Regionals reduce all of that cost by 90% or more.

I will add one more thing. If a turbo showed up at LOORRS no way they would have said, oh its factory, just go race in pro utv.. NEVER IN A MILLION YEARS!!

As of right now I do not know of anyone that can do as good or better job than Cory does. he knows our class which is important in my opinion. This has been a concern for our class for a long time, many still share the concern.

Let me talk to myself a little more here...

This discussion wasn't just for BITD. This was about WORCS, LOORRS, GNCC, etc.. Desert racing is much easier to accept the Turbo as another factory car, but do you think its fair to put a turbo 1000 vs. a standard NA 1000 at Lucas Oil??? lol Come on, you are either a homer or in denial if you agree with that sentiment. The turbo has a drastic increase / advantage over a NA powered UTV.

The concern I have, the reason I started the thread is how it affects racing. Its not the end of the world, racing will still grow and thrive, but how does it affect it.

I know nothing about the other series, I've always been a desert guy. So I have zero opinions or input in regards to any other form of off-road racing.

I think the only way we will really know how the Turbo will effect racing is to see it race. Bottom line we can all share our opinion's but until you get a few on the track (In a current class or new class) we have no idea if the Turbo concept is even a viable one for racing. Sure it might be a huge advantage on a groomed short course, or maybe high altitude back country race. But it could be the opposite for a dusty environment like desert racing. We wont know until someone spends the time & money to build one. Then after factoring the teams equipment & effort can you give real facts & data showing if the Turbo engine is an advantage or not.

I do think whatever happens there will need to be a rule regarding boost levels. I dont know how you would patrol & monitor it, but I think that would be one area that would have to have a clear rule written in the rule books. Other forms of racing which allow turbo cars have such rules and they must have a way to make sure that rule is being followed. Maybe the UTV inspectors will have to investigate and take a page out of those other forms of auto racing and see how they are policing and inspecting the rules.

Here are a few random thoughts:

A. Cory is doing a great job, albeit a thankless one. It is weird that I (we) race against the class rep, but somehow it works.

B. Why don't we get ahead of things by coming out with the SCORE and BITD PRO UTV rules for 2016. Here are a couple of suggestions.

1. Allow up to 33 inch O.D. tires. As Todd (Nikal) has said, you don't have to run them, but it would be an option. It is inevitable that we get bigger O.D. tires so why not allow a year's worth of testing to figure out what the magic tire diameter is? Yes, more rotating mass will break a lot of chit, but again that is why we should get a year to figure out some stuff.

2. Allow a 1000cc turbo engine OR up to a 1500cc NA engine.

3. Clarify that any transmission that comes standard is legal to run in the Pro UTV class. But you must run what originally came with the Ute. Eg...if it came with a CVT you must run THAT CVT. If it came with hydrostatic you must run that hrdrostatic...dual clutch, sequential, blah, blah, blah.

Instead of reacting to what the OEM's come out with we should get ahead of things.

In F1 and NASCAR, any significant rule change is given well in advance.

Maybe we should start a different thread to discuss what the 2016 rules should look like.

I think It should remain business as usual.

CC should be the only rule.

Rules, and always catering to keep it even and You get Nascar.

Turbo's are not witch craft, other manufactures can put one their machine too. Bitd shouldn't even give this a second thought.

11 hp Is hardly worth getting in a twist over.

Instead of reacting to what the OEM's come out with we should get ahead of things.

In F1 and NASCAR, any significant rule change is given well in advance.

Maybe we should start a different thread to discuss what the 2016 rules should look like.

Turbo's are not witch craft, other manufactures can put one their machine too. Bitd shouldn't even give this a second thought.

11 hp Is hardly worth getting in a twist over.

You make it seem black and white.. which is good but it isn't so simple..

Sure other OEMs can put Turbos on, and have, and will release at some point, but for now haven't so thats null and void.

Is it really catering if the class ABIDES by the rules they have in place which state no Turbos? Seems to me they would be catering to the Can-Am if they bent the rule or changed it.

CC should be the rule, and currently is what we live by in terms of class structure.

Maybe thy should make a class for each individual racer so everyone gets a trophy. I will bring snacks and juice boxes for everyone after the race.

If you didn't have a $10K + engine package in your UTV don't even bother showing up... that was only sustained for so long by Venbeekum, Funco, RJ Anderson, Kimbrell, etc... everyone else played for 4th place hoping for one of the fast guys to break.

The "demise" of UTV racing was brought on by LOORRS wanting to trim their overhead. Back then there were 11 classes, thats 11 classes of practice, qualifiers, races, that you have to pay staff to manage + equipment +hotels + fuel ++++. Now its down to 4-7 classes depending on the track (and I bet ProBuggy is next on the chopping block)

SR1 gave guys with Rhino's an option to get back out there and have some fun. Weller made that attainable and the SR1 has sustained itself as a class. But SR1 had nothing to do with us losing UTVs at LOORRS. If we had the RZR 1000 back then we would still be in the big show. Look at the numbers today at the Regionals. Then again, I doubt 50% or more of the current UTV racers would spend the money it costs to race LOORRS at the national level. Entry, pit costs, crew, travel, etc is not to be overlooked. Regionals reduce all of that cost by 90% or more.

I will add one more thing. If a turbo showed up at LOORRS no way they would have said, oh its factory, just go race in pro utv.. NEVER IN A MILLION YEARS!!

The LORORS rule book reads exactly as the BITD rule book when it comes to Supercharging.

Most Desert races are won by the guy who prepped the best and made his machine last, not the guy with 11 more hp.

I say let them add the turbo element and gamble that the 11 more hp is worth it.

My money is on the one with less stuff to go wrong

Let them race with current UTVs (1000cc)

Create new class just for Turbo / Supercharger
