Cost of Winning: The Monster Mav Chronicles

hah thats funny! but seriously, looking forward to see some BAM videos when you get that new camera!
Worry not, for I will be an equal opportunity Filmer! I never miss an exciting passerby, regardless of make, model, or class! I started filming SCORE races at the 1983 Mint 400, using an 8 mm silent camera w/the 50' reels. SOB had to weigh 5 lbs.

The SCORE Desert Challenge:

This, the 4th of 5 races in SCORE's 2014 season, will be a pivotal one for us. By now, most of you know of the damage sustained to the Monster Mav at the V2R race. I'm sure a majority of you saw or heard word of the "Mini" Monster Mav's appearance at the 4s' show in Costa Mesa this past weekend. It is the bandaid that we affixed in order to move forward in our quest for the championship in the 1900 pro UTV class of the 2014 SCORE desert racing series. Currently, we have 234 points, while the Murray's are at 217, followed by the X guys in third with 198 points I believe.

Given our last minute change of equipment, I am approaching this event with the expectation that we can race wisely and earn both our start and finish points for the weekend (50 total), plus a few "position points" to boot. I believe there are only 5 or 6 entrants in our class, and based on that, a last place finish is still good enough to arrive in Baja with a narrow points lead in November.
I'm happy to limp away and settle the score in Baja. Marc on the other hand feels that he can win it, and will drive the wheels off of the race car if necessary to accomplish that task. We have yet to commit to a sponsor for next season, and Marc has a point to prove. He told me that he's bringing his "A" game, along with some of this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lO4F9s56Crwfeature=youtu.be
to Imperial Valley this weekend. The man is on a mission, and is determined to show his worth to the powers that be, in order to prove his point. I'm happy to limp away unscathed, but Marc has never, nor will ever enter a race just to reach the other end.

For the record, Marc has not been involved in marking this course, nor has he pre ran it as of yet. Therefore, it should be a pretty level playing field, except for the fact that we are racing a Maverick, in nearly 100% stock trim (with the exception of safety equipment and replacement stock location shock absorbers), against the top equipment of the other teams.

The weekend will consist of two separately run races, each race running 8 laps around an 8 mile loop. We, along with the Murray's, drew 1st starting position in a format that I believe will have 2 cars starting sided by side, with subsequent rows following suit 30 seconds apart. The format leaves a lot to be desired, hence the low registration total thus far. It should prove to be a great spectator event, given the number of chances that fans will have to see their favorite teams and drivers.

So to all of our fans out there, wish us luck, and to all of the nay-sayers, don't come sniveling on here if your favorite team gets owned by a stock UTE!:p

Cross your eyes and toes this time guys. It's been another ridiculous all niter, preceded by the usual 11th hour rush for days on end. I'm so worn out, and have concerns whether or not I got it all covered. I know that you studmuffins out there can build a car in a couple of weeks, but this old man is just that. Old! Old and worn out from the never changing pre race rush.

If we have a good finish, I'll do a comprehensive post race report that will identify yet another chain of unfortunate events. I'm beginning to think that I'm the unfortunate part of this equation, or Marc just dislikes me enough to take my every waking hour, toss them into the air, and see if they all can settle back down in some organized fashion, along with my sanity!! If not a good finish is realized, these have been 2 weeks that I'd rather forget about, so sorry to say, no report:confused:.

Alba Racing
Thanks for the confidence and support guys, but we
GOT OUR ASSES HANDED TO US on this one.

Race Summary:
It seems like we are always stricken with some sort of dilemma or drama just days prior to us leaving for any race this season, and this race was no exception. Marc brought the car back from Alba on Thursday night, which still needed a fair amount of work done to it before departing for Imperial Valley. Upon his arrival, I looked at the trailer, and the rear most axle was broken in half, right in the center! It took me a good 6 or 7 hours to "scabricate" a fix, and had to work through the night to complete the repairs. That's the time I was supposed to be installing a new exhaust system on the Mini Monster Mav that Marc just "threw" my way at the last minute. Another all-niter for me leading up to a race. Worked like a slave straight thru, and thanks to the help of my brother, finally got the car and trailer ready to travel on Friday around 3 p.m.

I arrived in El Centro too late (as always, but as you should be beginning to expect that by now) to roll through contingency, and luckily was still able to get the car tech'd early Friday eve. Got a descent nights rest, and then prepared for the races ahead.

On Saturday morning, the X guys snuck up and nestled themselves right in the middle of ours and Cory's pits, kind of like how my sweetheart dog Trista nudges her way closer as I eat a tasty meal! The Murray Bros. rounded out the trio of the top SCORE pro UTV teams adjacent to one another, just to the right of Cory. The Jagged X people were pleasant, and Bill and myself engaged in our first lengthy conversation, where he was extremely generous in answering all of my nosey build questions!

About the wannabe race car: For reasons still unclear to me, the car topped out at a shameful 60 mph or so. We ran the same clutch set up that propelled the Monster Mav to 68+ mph, so we expected at least the same speed (but reliable) from the mini Monster Mav. Well , it didn't happen. Lucky for us, the Murrays broke a belt, and Cory broke down just before the finish line on the first day, so we got a third. Also got lapped 3 laps into the race! Put a new clutch in and made some suspension adjustments late Saturday night, then when we went to test the new setup this morning about an hour before staging time, and the car could only drive 35 mph tops. We couldn't figure it out (thanks to the Murray's for their help in trying to solve our problem when they should have been in their car at staging instead), so I recommended to Marc that he use low gear and race at least at an average of 28 mph or so. That would be enough to complete the course in the allotted time. He did just that, and we squeaked out of there maintaining our 17 point lead over our team mates, the Murrays. May have even stretched our advantage by 1 or 2 points as we head into the familiar territory that is the Baja 1000.

Ol' moneybags did awesome. On the first day, Johnny got a second, just 4 seconds off of getting his first win in the pro UTV 1900 class! Great job Johnny, you racing whore!
All in all, we got the results I was expecting, and was satisfied with, whilst Marc was bummed that he got badly beat. Like a stepchild. Again, by the Polaris clan. The last and slowest car on the race course this weekend was ours, as we finished within the allotted time limit, and secured the valuable finishing points that were necessary to keep us on top of the field. BS did an awesome job filling in for Matt, who chose to stay home to be with with a family member who is recovering from a serious injury. My best wishes to you and yours Matt, but did you have to send in BS to drive for you?!

So, there's the jest of it. The event was overall boring (as far as racing goes), and not well designed for the racer nor spectator. Oh, Rob Mac ran head on into a temporary light post on the first day of racing, ending his bid for the SCORE 2014 "Milestone Awards", where we were in 3rd place prior to this race. I don't know the status on where the 2nd place car finished, of if he even raced. I believe that we are now in at least 2nd place overall for the teams competing in the category for completing every mile of every race. Given the fact that we DNF'devery race last year, I'd say that we have made some improvements in the area of reliability. I am proud that we are mentioned within the likes of such a tough group of racers.

Now, With Baja just around the corner, I will finally direct my attention to the Monster Mav, and the badly needed repairs that lie ahead. I will quickly need to solve the problem(s) that arose this weekend on the Mini Mav, as we have had the same thing happen to the pre runner Mav right before V2R. Both similar conditions which find the car acting like it is in "limp mode", and both of which remain unsolved. Our concern is that the problem will rear its ugly head while racing in the 1000, being all cars are 2013 Maverick Xrs 1000's. YIKES!

Mac hit target approach marker not a light pole, what we thought was safely off the course till the trucks started racing. it was 20 plus feet tall and very solid.

I was told light pole. Specifically, the type contractors use to provide temporary lighting to areas with no provisions for it. There are people who seem to enjoy spreading bad or tragic news. Even if it is bad, bad tragic news. I didnt see him go back out after the incident, as his pits were just 2 or 3 stall away from ours. Did he indeed not go back out after the crash?

I am always looking for a bright side to disappointing events, and being a front runner for completing every mile of every race in this, our 2nd season in pro UTE's, is redemptive to say the least. It definitely gives me another drum to beat! For those tired of hearing the beat of my drum, worry not, for the boasting, comparing, judging, exposing and slamming of other entities and their shortfalls here will end with this seasons final race. I will have backed my smack with facts at that point, and only intend to post useful race and build info thereafter. Marc rides me pretty hard when I expose the weaker points of what a sponsor gives us. He says he is always on damage control. He has sponsors that date back more than 15 years, so I guess his loyalty over rides my honesty.

Damn you have some shitty luck.
In the last 5 years, my life has been a shit sandwich, with extra stink! I don't believe that I have had any power over, nor fault in, the pre race shenanigans that this season has dealt to us. I feel as though I have been targeted for testing, by an entity larger than myself. I've yet to understand why. I do know that I have met every challenge thus far, and will fight like a dog through the 1000 to prevail. Life is what you make of it, so they say...

Reid, being honest and Outright calling something crap is 2 different things brother. I have read some of your posts and thought to myself....did he really just post that?!?!?! Good job on the finish, you girls will definitely have a target on your back for B1K.;)

In the politically correct / polite backstabbing bullshit of a society we currently live in, I personally find Reid's candor and forthcoming's very refreshing.

Agreed

So what was the cause of the "slow down"? Engine go into limp mode? Clutch issue?
