DSR1 build, 2009 R-1 and keeping 4wd

Raber Racing - UTVUnderground Approved
I have decided to cut my car in half and stretch it. My cage was built in such a way that no one on my team including myself want to race the car again unless we can get some leg room. I spoke to the UTVRA and the DSR1 class allows wheelbase changes up to 103" so we decided to just swap a motor as we strech the cage. I have a Tom Pro reverse box that is 1.3:1 and a 2009 R-1 motor with cross plane crank sitting in the garage. I will be mounting the motor behind the passenger seat transversely and attaching a drive shaft to the output shaft. It will run forward to the revese box which will be standing upright and split power to the front/rear drive shafts just like a divorced transfer case. My combined gear reduction will be 5.68:1 which is much lower than the 4:1 used by the SR1 short course cars. I will have 4wd and reverse with no chain or belt to break. How long we stretch it will depend on how much room we need. We are stripping the car this week and starting the install next week. We will be running gear one out back to allow stronger shafts. I will take pics and keep you posted.

Now, how about some more DSR1 cars out there. Bike power, super reliable on pump gas, way fast, and much cheaper than building a PRO class utv. It is a points class with payback and a championship. Let's go guys.

wish i still had my sr1 and i would be in! One day maybe once i graduate ill see you out there!! good luck on the build, sounds cool

Way to go Bobby! I like your ideas, it was good talking to you. Lets get others with sxs collecting dust out of the garage and in the desert!

Sounds like an awesome build!!! The tom pro box is a nice unit. That what we used to build our R1 cars....IDK that the 4X4 would be all that important in desert racingbut it will be fun to watch the build.... the fun factor from the bike platform is redicilious!!:D:D:D

do you have any pictures and information you can share with us on your DSR1 leeper???

im already thinking of building a DSR1 i already have a friend looking for a R1 motor not sure if i would run a reverse box ...

what are the rules as far as suspension can i go +8 on the arms??maybe i should buy a rule book :D

should be a cool build, your adding alot of weight to have reverse though, IMO

we have one with 4x4, no chain issues so far. CBR 1000 in the pass seat and still have 4x4

Is yours a rhino or Teryx? I have a really nice desert rhino I could convert instead of the Teryx but I decided to use the Teryx because the drivetrain is so much stronger than the rhino stuff.

I am trying to eliminate the chain as well as add reverse. The Tom Pro box itself is not very heavy and it will eliminate sprockets and a chain and add a driveshaft. For the 20lbs or so that the box adds I get a driveshaft and reverse.

Not sure if 07fj has a mouse in his pocket when he says we....lol.... but the guy who has that 4x4 CBR 4x4 Teryx is a turd and his car is too for the most part. It hasn't lasted more than 15 minutes in a single race he has ran in. There are only 2 people I really despise in this industry and this guy who has that Teryx is one of them. he has the motor in the passenger seat and then a strait shaft that runs from the front diff to the rear diff with a sprocket in the middle. It looks pretty damn sketchy to me.

I know I know, tell you how I really feel......hahhahahahhaha

I think the rhino diffs are more that strong enough to handle the R1's power. Ben (controled force) is running 184hp to the wheels on a rhino/turbo rotax conversion and not having any diff issues. The rear diff really has nothing inside to break...and the front with welded ring gear bolts I believe would be plenty strong also.

it has had issues with electrical and cooling, not the driveline. we don't prep the car for the races, just built it. it is def not a turd, it will smoke Sr1s and we built the SR1 banana also.

yes it is a Teryx, two drive shafts not one like joey thinks it is. HRT does not do Sketchy, but does think outside the box.

If you think the TPD box is only gonna add 20 lbs, you should do more research though.

if your gear ratio ends up where you think it should, that will be great IMO.
does the TPD box, have a 2:1. the teryx diffs are 3.?? already

The TomPro box is 1.38:1. Also I believe they are 85 pounds. Our R1 cars came in at 1440 and weight was always something we considered during the build.

HRT builds some awesome stuff, Todd knows how I feel about his products as I have spoken to him numerous times in person and Rog ultimately you know how I feel about you and you know how and why I dont like Blue which anyone else in my shoes would hate him as well. BUT that car Blue campaigns is a turd until proven otherwise. It raced the Lake Elsinore GP and almost burned to the ground, 1 Lucas Oil regional and did 1 lap before losing a motor, and the Soboba GP which it didnt even make it 1 lap so until it can beat a stock Rhino in a race I would reserve the comments of it SMOKING AN SR1.

Now with that said, the concept is cool but as long as Blue owns it I will always hope that it fails much like his personality and character does. I also hate the fact that motor has to be in the passenger seat area completely taking it out of being able to have a passenger so for Desert racing purposes it is not a good design. For short course you could argue it but it looks as if it needs a bunch more refinement since it has so many problems.

BTW looks as if Blue is in process of ruining another website over there....not even his 3rd attempt at copying UTVUG is succeeding...hahahhaahah

Your my boy....ROG!

Sorry Bobby....HiJacked ya thread....

yeah he is partners with your boy Kyle! lol

I understand your issues with Blue, but honestly he has never done anything to me.

back at the Elsinore one, he did have a huge lead in just one lap, but ya do have to pay attention to the temp gauges once in a while, and he cooked it and it push oil onto the headers and caught fire. same motor blew at GH. intermittent electrical at SGP. Part of the bugs of not enough $$ to have it shook down properly.

back at ya JoeyD, have fun at MOAB :), HRT will be racing the truck.

Good luck on your build Bobby :D

I will be taking pictures at the Plaster City race. Todd likes to jump that truck.....

I have no comments about you know who's car. All I can say is he built a race car that cant race. Maybe its rules, maybe its prep, maybe its the driver but I am sure no matter what he will be a top cyber racer just as him............. 411 = 4 races 1 lap each.... That's not a great record.

The TomPro box is 1.38:1. Also I believe they are 85 pounds. Our R1 cars came in at 1440 and weight was always something we considered during the build.

The TomPro is 1.38 and the Teryx difffs are around 4.3 making the total 5.68:1. That is much lower than the typical R-1 swap that results in about 4:1. I know from experience that my CBR1000 with the weller drive system will do 98mph in 3rd gear. We are shooting for about 110-120mph tops which makes 90 realistic. The lower we gear it, the less stress on the gearbox and clutch. I will be using a racing clutch and heavy clutch springs. My car with normal Maxxis 26" tires (no tire balls) and five gallons of gas with all the race stuff on the car weighs 1358lbs. We will be adding about 150lbs to the car which is still not bad. I will be removing the secondary support bearing, adjustable mounts etc from the box which sould lighten it up. I was told it was not a very heavy box so 85lbs seems a bit much but could be right. Here is a pic of the box.

Tom Pro reverse box (generation 3) - PhotoPost Classifieds

Those are 930 flanges and the box is not much wider than the flanges. The box will stand up just like you see it in the pic and the driveshaft from the motor will connect to the top and the lower output flanges will connect to the front/rear driveshafts. The box will be between the driver/passenger which means we only need to stretch the car about 20" which is the length of the head on the motor. We will go from 74" wheelbas to 94" which is 9" less than a 4 seat RZR. Should be a good wheelbase. I will be using the existing radiator, oil cooler etc and the motors are about the same weight because the bike motor has no clutches hanging off the side. I will keep you guys posted. Should be a fun car if it comes together right.

Thats a good buy! you will save roatating weight also if you arent using the break on the box
