Maybe my point didn't come across right... What I was trying to state was, multiple people had made the comment that they were amazed that we could make it around w/o GPS. What I mentioned was that when racing bikes you really work on course memorization during prerunning, and a 40 mi course isn't that difficult to remember. Again, just my opinion... I definitely recommend GPS for any point to point or long distance race, I have one in my prerunner and it gets used frequently. I have raced the baja 1000 (5times) both on bikes and in a car, again almost a necessity for those races. Just a thought though.... When I raced bikes, you ride solo: no co pilot: triple digit speeds: no GPS = live or die situation if you don't memorize your course! So, I wasn't downplaying The importance of GPS nor was I complaining of the technology, just simply making note that it can still be done without it.....
