Cost of Winning: The Monster Mav Chronicles

All I know, is if I was spending 400 hours per month to prep any race car it better be the fastest thing on the planet earth. 400 hours at a 50 dollar an hour shop rate is 20,000 bucks a month to prep a UTV.

I think a class one or trophy truck might be less work. And that is saying something.

Can you hook the new cable on to the old cable and pull it through or are there a million zip ties on it?

I had to rebuild the complete lower back half of the car. Had to make jigs for and fab 2 lower control arms. Our car goes down to the frame most of the time I prep it. Every nut and bolt gets turned and checked for torque. Oh yeah, I maintain the chase truck, pick up parts, keep the shop inventory stocked, grounds keeper too. If you haven't noticed our car doesn't fall apart or break down.

THANKS GUYS!
I would like to thank Adam from Airdam without whose help our car would not have delivered. He not only stayed up until 4 a.m raceday morning with me working on the car, he helped chase the first 1/2 of the race with us. Also, a big thanks to Marc's son Shane and his friend Kevin, who took in his first off road race and loved it. And what would we have done without the help of UTVUG member and new friend Jim (Mearsman) Mears and his son Nick "90". (what can I say? At 18 years of age, the kid can throw a 90 + m.p.h. fastball) When one of our key crew members couldn't make it at the last minute, Jim stepped up and drove MB Chase 2 for us (a 68 vw bug). He did exactly as we asked of him, and is well versed in the Maverick, and the mechanical workings of it. He stayed up late on raceday morning with Nick by his side, helping to finalize the prep on our car. He also brought me a case of my favorite beverage as a bribe! Also, my brother Rick who put in the hours with me during the last crucial days here in the shop. And one last thanks to the Murrays for helping educate us and get us past our vapor lock problem mid-race. I always think I know everything until I don't, and find myself humbled when that time arises.

Our expectations of a podium finish were almost realized until we were taken out by an exchange with a TT at RM 443. I'll fill out a race report here later, once I've evaluated our next move to deal with the carnage caused by said incident.

The top TT teams go through and rebuild 60k motors, 20k transmission, 20k diffs, and 20k brake systems not including high dollar aircraft bolts, sherical balls, and heims so you might be a little off on this comparison.

I'm not sure if you are fabricator but building jigs and new one off a arms is time consuming not to mention building and replacing sections of the frame without many high dollar tools to help speed up the process.

Lets add in trying to come up with a solution for a crappy clutch design, making various improvements to the car and you could see where time gets eaten up in a hurry.

Thanks Reid for letting my son and I paricipate in this years V2R. For those of you who've in the past had an issue with Reid or Marc, I'm here to say that these guys are top notch. They couldn't have been more welcoming or accepting of us coming in and lending a hand. You never truly know someone until you've only gotten 1 1/2 of sleep the night before and have been up for 22 hours in the hot Nevada desert chasing a car. The caring and genuine compassion that Reid showed when Marc was stranded after being run over by a TT was amazing. Some of you in the past have had issues with Reid or Marc or both. My experience this weekend with 2 total strangers couldn't have been better. They're both genuine guys and I would do it again in a heartbeat. Marc has asked me to go to the BAJA 1000 with the team and I think I'm going to take him up on that offer.

Thanks again Reid for the invite to help out on the MONSTERMAV and the friendship that came out of it.

Yeah sandy, I feel really blessed. Beyond words. Reid is a very knowledgable guy. I think moreso than even I gave him credit. I gave him a lot as it was. Marc is a great guy too. He's a racer. I see that same look in his eyes that I see in my own. When the visor drops the bullshit stops

Like I said in my thread "Who is Reid Johnson?" I claimed that Reid was just misunderstood. As more people get to meet him in person, I think more will agree with me.

I totally agree. You can never measure a mans heart by his words. It's only by his actions. He's a really good guy and soooooo smart!

I have never met Mark but talked with Reid quite a bit at the 500 while waiting in line at contingency. He really is just a normal guy and I could talk racecars with him forever.

It was nice meeting you Mearsman at V2R and highly recommended going and checking out Baja. Its something you really cant describe and have to experience. Maybe I will see you down there.

It was nice chatting with you too bud. I wish it were under better circumstances. Hopefully we'll crack a couple cold ones in BAJA.

This photo was taken jus as Marc was calling in to report the Rm 443 incident. Sorry Johnny if I rudely departed our chat. You heard Marc's call. You could hear the distress in his voice. I had to go. You and I still haven't had a good talk yet. Maybe next race.
