BAJA 500 thread

Hey Bill, do you mind elaborating on the broken rear axles? Are they magnafluxed and inspected for cracks regularly? Is the rear suspension of your car adjustable, and if so, do you check the axle plunge every time you adjust? If you are willing to share, I am willing to learn! I understand if it is more proprietary as well

Happy to share, We run Summers brothers axles and in the last four seasons we have not had a failure.... not one! We service and inspect every race. Definitely no change in the plunge or suspension adjustment that would cause this, My thought at this point is that we shock loaded one of the shafts and it broke. Once you break one with the spooled rear end the other one is soon to follow. Like I said this is not a recurring problem so we will repair it and continue on our merry way.

Thanks bill. I will admit here that our axles, Summers bros. as well, are the same ones we started with last year. We purchased 2 sets (8 total), and have been rotating their use since. Just Magna-fluxed them for the first time 2 weeks before the 500 and :eek::eek::eek::eek:. They ALL had cracks! 2 were so bad that they were discarded as emergency spares only. The rest had cracks propogating from the root of the splines. Lots of them. There was no time to get new ones for the 500, so we ran 'em. We were so lucky to have limped in for the victory!

I'll start a new thread when I disassemble, and rebuild the Monster Mav for the V2R. It will be more thorough than ever before. The service life of many of the components has far been exceeded, and in some cases, not yet realized. I will include macro shots of the cracked axles so you all can see where to look on yours, as well as detailed pics of the damage and carnage sustained in the race, and how the repairs are performed. Marc ruined one of my new lower front arms, as well as 2 of the rear lower arms. I will be re-designing the lower arms to resemble a dihedral shape, in an effort to keep them out of harms way. Look for it next week.

So what happened to the cash you had in your hand on friday:confused:? I had 10 100 dollar bills ready to hand over if I lost, as did you. Prankster Johnny pulls the old switcharoo on me. You'll make more friends than enemies in this forum by paying me with pennies. I'm not well received here by most, and they'll get a kick out of it! So, who's it going to be? Old Dominion? Yellow Freight? Maybe Roadway or better yet, have Daley drop it off in one of their 10 yard dumptrucks. Am I really going to need a forklift to unload my winnings? That's just a shit sandwich with extra stink! Maybe I'll get lucky and find a 1958 Denver Mint in there worth 50k! Don't be surprised when your UTE stops running at the V2R and there is 25 lbs. of pennies in your gas tank!

I spent the cash on a new bucket and shovel ..here you talk about Friends, But as I recall I was standing on the beach waiting for you to come out and play ... had my bucket and shovel, looked everywhere for you.. high tide rolled in and you left me standing alone .. you threw that "I gota be a man" line out and left me hanging and did a motor swap instead ...

Even when I win, I lose!! I'll be on the prowl at V2R, so Johnny better keep on his toes. Maybe I can order him a "Visine" coctkail when we have a drink together!:p

I don't think you necessarily need to give Johnny a visine cocktail if you can get him to even have a drink. Bc if you can get him to have a drink we might ALL end up at sapphire...
