FOR SALE
One beat up flat bed trailer, One bent axle, two square wheels and one shredded tire. for sale or trade for Steekers!
Your not the first or only ones! Now that you have experienced it, you will start to notice how many trailers have a complete extra axle mounted under the deck of the trailer for this very reason. I personally have not bent up an axle, but several of the teams I have raced or helped over the years have. One of the first I saw carrying a spare axle was Corky McMillin. He caught one of those 1 foot tall concrete storm drain walls which is inches from the shoulder and ripped an axle out of an enclosed trailer going south on Hwy 1. After that all McMillin trailers had spare axles mounted underneath them.
On my trailer I welded an eyelet right above each axle on the frame. This way if I blew a tire and did not have another spare, or bent or broke the springs, I could jack up the axle and chain it up to the frame. Its not ideal, but it could be limped home that way.
If you pay attention on the way back from a La Paz finish Baja 1000, you will notice F350's with missing drivers side mirrors, and trailers with right side tire, axle and just general damage. You see & hear all the time that some simi truck took off some guys mirror as then were passing. My buddy lost his and in the impact the mirror glass fragments were imbedded in the driver side window. It was crazy scary!
Years ago I saw a race car being driven on the hwy 1 behind a truck with an empty trailer. I guess they broke an axle and the best option they had was to unload the trailer and limp it back to the nearest town or all the way home. If I'm remembering right they were just south of San Quentin heading North.
You think the race is the only event, until you have to haul it all home. Its like part 2 of the Baja 1000.
