Official UTVUnderground 2013 Baja 500 Updates & Photo Thread

Yea I would like to hear the report when you get a chance... That car uses all factory wiring and components. I've read of several issues on the x forums, with sensors/wiring

Rusty, I need that 'game face' pic. Great shot of my ugly azz, wrinkled melon.

Cory Sappington got 2nd place in the Can-Am Maverick!!!
Awesome job Cory and team!

Don't know about the other finishers. Heard it was a brutal race course.

I have to say those canams were looking awesome in desert trim. Made me eyeball them a little harder at the dealer the other day..

Wow! what a race. Baja is always a surprise. We had a great time in Baja. The Can Am Maverick was running amazing. We ran nice and smooth with not a single issue. Not even a flat tire in some of the craziest terrain. Even took out some cactus with no issues. Had a good battle with the Jagged guys back and forth for a long time. Unfortunately we had a ravine take us out at 358 miles and put us end over end braking off some bolts and steering rack up front. Just did not have enough time to get the Maverick repaired. Congrats to the Jagged guys and Cory Sapington for finishing well! Was a brutal course, and it was well earned!!

that sucks you guys had a huge lead good write up.

There were 4 guys on my team Cory Sappington driver all 500 miles, Donovan Cain navigator start to mile 203, Tyler Dixon navigator 203 to finish, Benny Pena chase guy start to finish. Tyler and Ben had never been to Mexico and Donovan had only been to Mexico once. This was Tyler's 2nd time navigating. The start went great. We were in cruise mode being extra careful through town. We still managed to pass 3 of the 5 UTVs that started ahead of us. Through Ojos I think we were 3rd. At mile 50ish we got a rear flat. While changing it many UTVs passed us. At mile 75 the engine quit without warning. We determined that the fuel was too hot from the exhaust being too close to the tank. We changed the fuel pump location and the Maverick restarted. We got to mile 82 and it shut off again. Our chase team came to us and we made an ice chest out of a Tupperware tub that we put the fuel pump in. We packed it full of ice and a towel, this worked great. We part way up the summit and came to a bottle neck. There were about 15 cars waiting at the bottom of a hill climb. Cameron Steele was right in front of us in his tt truck. Many drivers were out of their cars. Cameron jumped out and ran up course to look for a way around the line. Meanwhile the car on the hill cleared and then next car went. Cameron came back to his tt truck and went left around the line over a hill down a ledge and made it to
3rd in line. Seeing this I knew my Maverick could do the same. I went left up over the hill and tried to get behind Cameron, but everyone had bumpered up so there was no gap for me. As the line started moving I waited for the oppurtunity to jump the ledge and get in line the 5 vehicle in line was a nonracer in a Jeep Rubicon. He hesitated to pull forward so a gunned it a jumped in front of him. I waited my turn to charge the hill and never looked back. The Maverick had no trouble climbing that hill or any other of the knarley hill climbs in the race. We made it to mile 160 to stop for fuel at Baja pits, just then our engine sputtered and died. Our fuel pump ice chest was out of ice. We got fuel and Baja pits only had a little ice for us. We pressed on at mile 180 the engine died again. We waited a while to let the fuel cool down. The sun was setting and I knew that it would be much cooler at night and our fuel problem would go away. We started up again and made another few miles before the engine died. This time I decided to change the fuel pump. With the new fuel pump installed we pressed on to mile 203. We had a scheduled navigator change and fuel. I made a heat shield and put it between the exhaust and fuel cell. We packed the fuel pump ice chest with ice. I had a pbj sandwich 2 rockstars and headed off into the night. The Maverick loved the cool night air and was running like a champ. At mile 358 we stopped for the Murrays to see if we could help. They told us we were in second and I was amazed. At that point I knew that all I had to do was finish and we would maintain 2nd. It was like a dream! I backed the pace down about 25% and just enjoyed what Baja had to offer. We did get 1 more rear flat at mile 400, where our chase team was waiting, after crossing over on the Valley T road. They quickly change it and went pressed on to the finished. At the finish I was numb from driving 500 mile in 20 hours. With no prerunning, no power steering, all stock Can-Am components and a rookie chase team we had beaten Baja. I am very impressed with the power and handling of the stock Maverick. I have race in many other bigger engine class vehicles and the Maverick is just as fun. The twin cylinder feels like it has the power of a 4 cylinder. We had no problems with any of the stock parts.
Thank you to all the other UTV teams for offering to help if we needed it.
Thank you to our sponsors Can-Am, Maxxis, Elka Shocks, OMF Wheels, Shorai Batteries, Rigid Lights, Lucas Oil, PCI Radios, UTV Offroad Magazine, Fitch Racing, Desert Toyz

Well I had a great week in Baja and a not so great race day.We got to Horsepower ranch on Saturday one week before the race and started preparing for the race. The plan was to prerun our sections and give the race car a shakedown since it just got a new Muzzy motor and a super trick new suspension system.
We pre ran RM40 to 80 in the race car and The Muzzy motor ran awesome and the car handled great with the new suspension setup,we did some fine tuning and did it again and the cat was great and ready to race.I also pre ran the rest of my sections a couple of times in the Wildcat pre runner and it was awesome and ran flawless the whole time.
Race day came and I was ready to go,we left 4th off the line and set out with safe but fast pace to try and pick up some spots because I new it was going to be dusty after the arches to Ojos.I picked up a couple of spots in my class before the arches and then settled in to the dust trail.I ended up making an unscheduled stop at Ojos when I had the dash in diag mode and didn't think the 4x4 was engaging. After a couple of minutes to figure out what I did we were off and running good.
We set into to a good pace when at RM 65 the car went into to limp mode and we had to stop and check it out.We screwed with it for quite a while and were able to get it to RM 72 when we had to wire around the gear selector switch that was overheating, probably from the exhaust and extreme temps that day.
We topped off with fuel and headed for the Summit. We just got going up and the car quit again. My co driver got out to check it out when he said a 10 car was coming and BAM the dude runs over the left rear of the Wildcat and high centers on top of the LR tire.We push him off and pour water over the fuel pump, do our best to insulate it, and it starts and off we go.We go another mile or so and run into a 25 car log jam at a hill climb. We get out and hike all around looking for a alternative route only to have to wait in line for an hour or 2.
We finally get our turn and easily climbed out with the advantage of 4wd.We did the 10 miles over the Summit and the 30 miles of rocky sand wash and hit the dry lake bed.We are cruising along and the car dies again. We get out and fuel pressure is good but we have no spark. After a couple of hours of check every connection, fuse, relay, and changing out spare parts we were unable to get it running and called it a day.
Over all I was very impressed with the Wildcats performance but I think the extreme heat(the truck said 120 degrees on the thermometer),small amount of test time, and the brutal course caused some problems that we couldn't over come.We will be back for the 1000 with an even better race car and ready to have some more fun.
Congrats to the finishers and thanks to all the UTV's that came out and raced, hopefully there will be more at the 1000.
Thanks Tonka Off Road for the opportunity to race, and Wildcat and Muzzys for a fun race car.
Hans
