Official: SCORE San Felipe 250 thread

Nope I stayed behind, I have a ton of work and have 5 cars to paint for rpm for the mint. So I'm bench racing. Lol I will be at the mint for sure.

Looks like Burnett won, with Parks 20 miles out, lopez parked, and Murry a mile behind parks

Jose Romero, Arlington TN!? small world. I thought we were the only ones crazy enough to drive that far to race! Hit me up sometime.

Wow. No love at all. Many of you suggested that I shut up and put my money where my mouth is, and I did. You can ignore us here and now, and try to minimize our victory, but at years end, you will succomb to our efforts. CANNED HAM BITCHES!

Great job. I tried to catch you on the podium but my ears were bleeding. George kills me. I refreshed my screen right as you were pulling off. 2 Can-Am cars on top to the start the season is great for our sport.

Don't get too worked up Reid....
I understand that the awesome videos we all get to enjoy here are a direct result of Polaris, and their funding of them. It's just somewhat deflating when , upon our first win, there was no-one there to cover that moment. But we all know that if Jagged X, who chose not to show up for their third place trophy by the way, was the one leading, that the finish line coverage would have been much different. At the final Baja pit, Marc came through in 3rd about 11 minutes (dont yet quote me on that split) behind Parks. Marc was running him down with the Monster Mav, (just as he did at mile 30 when x was in his sights and our belt broke) and our communication at that time was "It's Jagged X. You run his a-- down, and pass him. At this point, we were not going to be beat by ANY Polaris. Parks who was leading was in un-common territory of being run down, in the last miles of a race, with no way to stop it. I heard they had battery problems, or something electrical. We here at MB Motorsports are confident that his biggest problem was the hard charging and able Maverick that Marc Burnett would not let be denied of its first victory. In Matt's defense, when the last minute course change was broadcast, our team was salivating at the fact that Marcs knowledge and experience of the Baja terrrain, and his ability to out drive any other utv's on the fire roads out of Mikes, shifted the advantage to our team, and no-one ever had a chance after that. Check out Marc out driving a TROPHY TRUCK on his way into Valley T on MB motorsports Fbook page.
When I labeled the car as "badass", I did so because I know it is the most extreme, homebuilt car out there, and has the ability to win any other car in its class, wheel to wheel. Indicative of this point will be our results this year. We have worked hard in the off season to work out our "packaging" bugs that plagued us last season.
I would like to thank and give credit to my brother, Rick Johnson, who was the second half of the two man team who created this vehicle in 3 long months last year, and is unfortunately not part of the team this year. The victory was hollow without him there to share it with.
C'mon CAN-AN, it's time to show us some love! Throwing in that bare frame is now looking like a pretty wise move on your part. I'll say this with the "Barney Fife" sniffle of confidence,"Yep, it was my suggestion regarding the bare frame that kept Can-am on board for 2014". Ha! Heee! I've gone MAD!!

Good for you and the team. As a friend of Marc Burnett and knowing how hard he has worked to get this win I am extremely happy for him.

But let me correct you real quick because I get a little irritated when I feel like someone is taking a shot at our site:

Do you think that we are here hanging out in California and then when we hear a Polaris is going to win we jump in the cars and head south and cover the finish line? hahaha

Last year, like the year before I was at the arches standing at the finish line, and if you were first to cross I would have had pics of you and a story to write about you. But this year I was in Glamis, not San Felipe. Not because I didn't want to go to SF but because sometimes I can't be everywhere all at once. I have ZERO budget for this race from ANYONE, therefore I pull money out of our pocket to pay a photographer to get us something. so that you can click this photo below and at least see a few UTV specific pics.

Let this be a clear message to you guys. If UTVUnderground.com isn't down there, look at how dismal the coverage really is. The photographer I got pics from was there to cover the Unlimited race, so I get what I get. When we go as a team, we cover UTVs and UTVs only therefore we get a ton more! When Polaris or Can-am or ANYONE pays us to create a video then WE ALL get some added exposure and attention on the sport. But you don't see any other UTV specific site doing anything for you down there do you?? Anyone else paying for images or writing a story?? I haven't seen anything yet!

Don't take it out on UTVUnderground.com that there was no one there waiting for you at the finish line. We can only do so much. With that said, we will be at the Baja 500 and Baja 1000 and thankfully Polaris is backing us for another season to cover the race via video!

I think sometimes people think that us going and doing coverage of the races is somehow free for us or just expected. We have bills like everyone else, advertising isn't able to cover my expenses to travel to every race without sponsors help. However, still to this day even with OEM support, we still pull money out of our pockets for majority of the events we cover.

So my advice to everyone is this. Want BAD ASS coverage of your race, then pay a photographer to COVER you. Otherwise, be happy that we do what we can to support you. If you are mad that Polaris has a lot of coverage on UTVUnderground.com, then don't get mad at us, share your complaints with the other OEMs that they maybe aren't doing as much or enough to satisfy your needs as a consumer.

Anyway.. off my soapbox.

1932 Race Report:
First off congrats to Marc Burnett and Derek Murray for getting first and second at the SF250. Also congratulations to all of the Pro UTV finishers, and I think we got 12 out of 14 across the line. The Pro UTV field continues to grow in SCORE and again we were the third largest class.

For us the race was very fun, but it was a very weird day. We heard at the drivers meeting that the Summit and the top part of Laguna Salada were completely washed out and impassible. Soooo....on race day we monitored Weatherman and discovered that the they re-routed and shortened the course around this area and the Car/Truck start would be delayed. This was disappointing to me and Jason because we had done our best recon in this area from Valle T to the road crossing. Oh well!

We drew the 4th starting position and I think we went off the line just after 2 pm. We had moved past the three Utes ahead of us by RM 12 and had passed about ten other cars/trucks in other classes. But our belt was getting hot so we decided to back off. By the time we got into the whoops at RM 20 we had lost 4wd, which made driving in the whoops to Morellia Junction very difficult in a short wheel base UTV. We just putt putted along until we could get to our crew at RM 40. Brandon checked all of the connections and figured that the switch had come un-plugged. So we lost about four minutes here and when we took off we had only had a two minute lead on Glascraft.

We hauled azz across Laguna Diablo into a wicked head wind. We caught a SCORE Lite coming off the lake but we again lost 4wd. So we just cruised up the wash to Matias, where we met the Bill and Bill show in the PBR chase truck for fuel and 4wd fix. They couldn't reattach the electrical so we tore the top of the dash off pulled the switch and taped and zip tied it so we would finally be done with this issue. Here we lost about 14 minutes and again Glascraft was two minutes behind us. So we got after it going up the Mike's loop, but is was now pouring rain and it had been raining in this area for a long time. There were crashed cars everywhere in this section, but super fun rallycrossing the RZR through the baby-chit mud. Jason had a jacket on, but I was too stupid to have one so I was soaked from head to toe.

At Valle T the course would have turned left and gone up the Goat Trail, but due to the storm we were redirected south on the highway for around 45 miles. It rained for about half of this highway section and we met our crew at Borrego for a splash of fuel and our light bar. Here we were redirected up a new 12 mile section where we would then intersect the course at RM224. This rocky crap really sucked but we were able to get by a few more trucks and buggies. We got to RM 230 and we lost power steering. It was weird so we met our crew at RM 240 for a quick look, but when we stopped the car died. We jump started the car and took off but about two miles up the road the RZR went into limp mode. Soooo...we pulled off the course, and tried to call the team but we had no power. We jumped out and Jason went to work on the electrical while I shut off everything and then restart the radio. I was able to get word to the crew of our 20. They met us about five minutes later and they went to work on the electrical. We thought we had lost the stator but were not sure. So we decided to change the battery and try and limp the final 30 miles to the finish. We were down around 30-35 minutes and we were just trying to crawl to the finish with all of our electrical stuff turned off and only running the stock headlights. During this down time we saw the Glazcraft and the Tire Blocks car pass us. About 15 miles from the finish we broke the sway bar and it was banging around back there, but obviously we couldn't do anything about it except drive the rollie pollie thing the rest of the way. But as luck would have it the two cars that passed us were both broken down and we thought we might be leading again. About 10 miles from the finish Jason thought that we were now charging again and we turned the radio back on and the lower Vision X lights. We saw some bright lights in mirror and we figured it was the Derek in the Canned Hammer. So we put the hammer down, but knew that they were likely going to beat us on time. We crossed the finish line and they were right behind us. We congratulated them on the win, but learned from George on the podium that the Burnett 1905 car came in a half hour ago. After the race a lot of people were questioning this because they hadn't seen them all day. But the bottom line is they must have done more homework during their pre-run than the rest of us and got by with better lines in a section where the course was running VCP to VCP. So Kudo's to them. It was really fun hanging out and drinking beer with the other UTV finishers after the race. Our class is very tight knit and we all get along with each other.

Even though this is the worst finish for the 1932 car since October of 2012, we fought through our issues and got our brand new XP1000 on the box. Thanks to our very small crew of JXWS, JXBS, Bill 'Santa' Rowe, Mussle Mark, and Dakata...plus long time co-dog Jason. The team would also like to thank Polaris, Jagged X, Walker Evans Racing Shocks, CR Designs, Muzzy Exhaust, OMF, Vision X and finally 'La Generale' taco stand. Plus let's not forget Joey D from UTVUG. Woot...woot!

Again congrats to all of the winners and finishers. See you at the next one. Let's get some of the other BITD guys at the SCORE IV250. It would be great to see over 20 Utes show up there.

Thanks for taking the time to share your race story Matt!! Wish I could have been down there drinking beers and grinding tacos with you all!! Wait to keep pushing!

It was my bad. I assumed you were covering the race, being the season opener and all. My reply was also addressing the post by Rusty (If I am correct, he is a representative of the underground) that linked to clips only of 2nd and 3rd place finishers, as well as the other podium guys going home early, since they didn't win. It is my luck that they had an emergency back home, and had to leave immediately following the race, and I will be corrected again. Anyway, Rusty's "bleeding ears" and inability to make it to the finish line on time doesn't mean that he didn't know who won when posting the 2nd and 3rd place finishers. Even though he did not have a video link to post, he MUST have known who won the race, and could have said so verbally when posting the 2nd and 3rd place guys. Am I wrong in this assesment? Perhaps I have planted a seed in everyones minds that causes "innocent oversight". Hell, I don't know. I understand your commitment to the sport in whole, and the reasons for tho Polaris coverage. We spoke about that at Glamis. I agree that you are doing your best for promoting the utv sport and the various forms of racing they participate in. I guess the resentment I feel against us is directly related to the boasting I have done in the past, and how we are viewed as a result. Perhaps it was an honest mistake that we were left out of Rusty's race report. I am in no way bashing you or your site, and apologize if I have come across as doing so.

For the sake of disclosure, I'd like to say that I didn't realize your car had so many problems throughout the race. Pretty impressive that you kept the gap around 30 minutes. Despite our cars slowness in the sand washes (I'll avoid shame by saying how slow), we had about 1/2 hour of down time. Marc's ability to find his way in Baja is amazing. You can put a blind fold on him, spin him around, and he'll still know the quickest path to the closest town when in Baja. Add in elements like rain or other extreme conditions, and his advantage only multiplies. I must say that we were stoked when the last minute course changes were announced. We knew it shifted an already weighted advantage more towards our car. Baja is Marc's back yard. He's raced and played in it for nearly 30 years. He doesn't need to cut the course or cheat in any way to win in Baja with the car we've built. That being said, we are hoping to perform as well in the Nevada desert, where the homefield advantage shifts away from us and onto other teams familiar with that terrain, and how to get a UTV across it. Although I was his main chase during the race, health issues caused me to miss being there at the finish line, and I was deflated not to be able to see you guys at the awards ceremony where we could have traded stories. I'm sure Marc will post a race report on his Fbook, and I will put a link here as soon as he does. There is good behind the scenes video of how we dealt with the course change, and our race strategy in general.
