Formula Desert Lites held it's final race of 2010 in California City, California. Three teams managed to take the green flag in conditions that were less than ideal to say the least! Rain fell steadily the night before the event, it let up around 7:00am and looked to be clearing, it wasn't! At 10:00am the bikes began lining up and leaving at 30 second intervals. As the green flag fell so did the rain and the temperature. Three minutes after the last quad left the line the TomPro Designs Hayabusa powered Formula 1400 left the line. Tom Nyhuus owner and driver of the TomPro Formula 1400 class buggy started off the weekend with a bang or clang more like it, as his transmission let loose on him during his pre-run on Friday afternoon. Tom and his team are dedicated racers and immediately tore the transmission out and drove straight to his shop in Paso Robles, California. The repairs were not minor as he had to re-spline gears and mill several major pieces in the transmission. They returned at 3:00am and were hard at work installing the trans at around 6:00am. Unfortunately with the transmission fixed another bug reared its ugly head and fuel issues kept the Hayabusa from showing what it is known for, SPEED. Chris Ward left the line next in his MOD UTV class Polaris RZR, followed by Chris Blais in his MOD UTV class Polaris RZR. Chris Ward, the 2010 Class 2 Champion in the WORCS series caught Tom Nyhuus almost immediately off the start. Soon after that Chris Blais Class 1 Champion in the WORCS series made it a three car train through the wet California Desert. Horns were soon honking and tempers rising as the Chris and Chris cars of this train were desperate to make a pass. The track was just too narrow at that point for it to be possible. Eventually Blais found a spot and made his move passing both the cars in front of him. Chris Ward continued to show patience and resisted the urge to give Nyhuus the steel horn. At around mile marker 15 not long after Blais made his pass an opening showed in a corner and Ward made his move! Unfortunately either Nyhuus did not see or did not want an RZR passing him again, and contact sent the RZR of Ward barrel rolling out into the desert eventually ending up on its side. They quickly righted the RZR and managed to continue on but a flat and lack of spare put an end to a wet and muddy race for Ward. Blais now in the lead with no dust but plenty of cold wind and rain in front of him was moving fast yet not hurting his car. Blais at one point lost the course but quickly backtracked and got on track only to be passed by Tom Nyhuus who found some power again. Nyhuus would eventually come to a stop with more mechanical issues. Chris Blais continued on and finished a total of two laps to take the overall win in the FDL classes and 23rd overall including bikes and quads. After a 100 miles of a mix of high speed and whooped out sections with a few hills thrown in. Blais said ,“The course was very well laid out especially for a UTV. A great mix of some tighter stuff mixed with some really fast roads and some short rough sections. This is going to be a fun series with these car friendly courses.†The 2011 season for Formula Desert Lites begins in February.
