Willamette National Forest Seeks Comments on Proposed Action

The Willamette National Forest, located in west-central Oregon, has released a Proposed Action to update their current transportation system.

The proposed action would involve amending the Forest Plan to prohibit motorized travel off of a designated system of travel routes in all Management Areas. It would also identify access zones throughout the Forest in which motor vehicles may travel off the designated system of roads and trails for dispersed camping. Within each zone, motorized travel would be allowed off the designated system road for entering and exiting dispersed campsites within 300' of its centerline. Travel in those zones would only be allowed along existing routes to existing campsites.

The Forest Service (FS) is seeking your input to help them analyze the effects of the proposed action for their Environmental Assessment (EA).

Public involvement will be ongoing throughout the EA process. However, written scoping comments should be received by April 15, 2009. Comments received, including the names and addresses of those who comment, will be considered part of the public record on this proposal and will be available for public inspection.

The comments received from the public will be used to identify issues and develop alternatives to the proposed action that will be considered in the Environmental Assessment. The FS plans to release the EA in May 2009, followed by another 30-day comment period.
