Something to Think About - GPS, Phones

A fan had their car broken into while they were at a football game. Their car was parked on the green which was adjacent to the football stadium and specially allotted to football fans. Things stolen from the car included a garage door remote control, some money and a GPS which had been prominently mounted on the dashboard.

When the victims got home, they found that their house had been ransacked and just about everything worth anything had been stolen.

The thieves had used the GPS to guide them to the house. They then used the garage remote control to open the garage door and gain entry to the house. The thieves knew the owners were at the football game, they knew what time the game was scheduled to finish and so they knew how much time they had to clean out the house. It appeared that they had brought a truck to empty the house of its contents.

Something to consider if you have a GPS - don't put your home address in it. Put a nearby address (like a store or gas station) so you can still find your way home if you need to, but no one else would know where you live if your GPS were stolen.

MOBILE PHONES

This lady has now changed her habit of how she lists her names on her mobile phone after her handbag was stolen. Her handbag, which contained her cell phone, credit card, wallet... etc... was stolen.

20 minutes later when she called her hubby, from a pay phone telling him what had happened, hubby says 'I received your text asking about our Pin number and I've replied a little while ago.'

When they rushed down to the bank, the bank staff told them all the money was already withdrawn. The thief had actually used the stolen cell phone to text 'hubby' in the contact list and got hold of the pin number. Within 20 minutes he had withdrawn all the money from their bank account.

Moral of the lesson:

Do not disclose the relationship between you and the people in your contact list.
Avoid using names like Home, Honey, Hubby, Sweetheart, Dad, Mom, etc....

And very importantly, when sensitive info is being asked through texts, CONFIRM by calling back.

Also, when you're being text by friends or family to meet them somewhere, be sure to call back to confirm that the message came from them. If you don't reach them, be very careful about going places to meet 'family and friends' who text you.

Good words of advice. I just put a passcode on my phone after reading this. But remember, even without a GPS and a garage door opener, your car probably has registration in the glove box with your home address on it. You never can be too safe.

Just kidding my wife is listed in my phone as "wife" (i should change that) None of my street vehicles have a GPS (to poor) and my garage door opener is me.

When i use to work at sprint i had atleast 1 customer a week come in and tell me they want gps disabled from their smart phone to prevent this. My first thought was "what kinda sketchy life you livin to have someone track u"

But, it really happens. If your phone gets stolen you have your whole life in there.

Don't worry Kyle - We have a 20 year old sway back mule out behind the barn named Melissa that he's referring to.

I thought moving to Colorado would help him get past this.

BTW, i did a little work on the old 6.7 over the last couple of weeks.new head bolts, EGR delete, EGR Valve Delete, H&S mini max programer, 4" turbo back pipe, H&S big air manifold, H&S cold air induction tube for the cold air charger, both on the turbo side and the intake side, H&S trans software to help out the old slush box, and S&B cold air intake kit. SHE is a beast now!!!!! Soon to get the ATS torque converter and new injectors. And not quite 10,000 miles yet.

Hey my wife is very paranoid about this stuff. This is what we do. Make sure you phone is locked. For the iPhone put a pass key on with lock every time. I have mine to erase after the 10th try. Also your gps should be a random house about a block away so if you ever lose it they only get in the area.

I just have one question, How many people need a GPS to get home? I cant think of a time I have ever used my GPS to get home.

Nope, She uses it to get places but not to get home. Most GPS units have a memory of previous searches. You should be able to search your home address but not mark in your address book. Then when your lost and cant find your house you type in your address and it will auto-fill.

But my wife was raised on a Jeep trail and in the desert so maybe she just has a good sense of direction. I have a friend that needs a GPS everyday and he has worked and lived in the same house for 10 plus years.
