BARSTOW • The owner of a local cafe and a Sacramento man were both killed Thursday afternoon after a head-on collision between the two men’s vehicles on Highway 247 near Barstow.

According to a report from the San Bernardino County Coroner’s Department, 41-year-old Abdul Formoli of Sacramento was driving a Toyota two-door northbound on Highway 247 about five miles from Barstow when he drifted onto the southbound side around 2:25 p.m. Slash-X Ranch Cafe owner Brian Lynn of Barstow was driving southbound with his wife in his Ford F150 pickup truck.

Formoli’s vehicle struck Lynn’s truck head-on and both vehicles then caught fire, according to the report. Formoli was confirmed dead at the scene and Lynn was flown to Loma Linda University Medical Center, where he died at 4:38 p.m. Lynn’s wife was treated at Barstow Community Hospital for her injuries.

Slash X Ranch was started by Lee and Mary Berry who were very well known pioneers of the Barstow area. They would often be seen parading around with Mary riding their appaloosa stallion "Joker B" (who later became famous as a foundation sire for his breed) and leading Lee, who would ride astride their pet Brahma bull.

Historically known as the Slash X Ranch Cafe, it was built in 1954 of logs and beams from Oregon for the ranch hands of the Slash X Cattle Ranch. The ehistorical beam is the oldest and largest known in San Bernardino County.

Slash X Ranch Cafe is located in Stoddard Valley 8 miles south of Barstow, on Hwy 247, it is surrounded by 58,000 acres, and approximately 25 square miles of OHV (off road vehicle use) set aside by the BLM. On any weekend you will find hundreds of motorcycles and off-road buggies parked out in front, with their owners stopping in for a bite to eat with their families.
