Rhino won't start

i know I'm driving a dinosaur but I'm stuck on this one. Me and the guys were driving in the desert this weekend. I was having what I thought was battery issues before this. Almost at the governor when the motor started making a bad noise. Seconds after that I lost power and the car turned off. Smoke was pouring from the engine compartment. Tried everything. It's acting like it has low voltage but sometimes it cranks but never fires. Pulled the plug, it has a good burn on it and it's not smashed. It has compression and if I take the valve cover off I can see the springs move up and down and the rocker arm is intact. It also has oil pressure and plenty of Fuel. I can damn near fix anything I just don't know where else to look. Any ideas would help at this point. Thanks.

Change out the cdi for a known good one? We used to replace the oem with a Dynatech for more speed or something. Could have gone bad. You just need spark, fuel, and compression, and you say you have all of those. Timing chain might be stretched and jumped a tooth or three?

Not sure about smoke pouring out though?

Did you try starting fluid? Carb or Fuel Injection?

I have a black rhino cdi box. I'm pretty sure the smoke was from the oil blowing out of my re breather that I have on it. There was oil coming out of it when I checked when I pulled the engine cover off. I have researched it a little bit and the motor jumping the timing is the only thing that makes sense with what the motor is doing. I would try starting fluid but it's so random if I can even get the thing to crank. Most of the time it just cranks in the stater solenoid. Then out of no where it will crank for a bit. Then it won't fire. If I try to start it again, nothing.

Have you checked the belt/clutches to make sure it didn't let go and get bound up stopping the motor or crankshaft through the clutch or something strange like that?

The belt is still on and I have a dry clutch on the car. I haven't pulled the sheeve off to look at the weights on the clutch yet tho.

Did you check the oil before you drove it? Probably piss poor driving ability caused it. FIX ANYTHING?? Hahahahah as long as I have the parts or pieces you need!!!! Just kiddin' 1904 you know you are my Bud

If the clutch is exposed try spinning the motor over by hand and make sure you dont have an internal motor issue.

I pulled the belt and the clutch off. I have compression, I can turn the motor by hand with no noise. I want to check and see if it jumped timing cause that makes the most sense to me.but I need to see if I can get to the chain without tearing the whole motor apart. I'm not sure where it's at. Also I still have it in the back of my head that all this could be tied to electrical some how. I'm not exactly sure why it just clicks some times and cranks other times.

definitely could be electrical, i know my 06 Rhino with an upgraded cdi box forget which brand would be very hard to start and i would switch it back to stock and boom would fire right up 1st crank

Have your wife (or girl friend) hold the plug wire with her finger in the "boot" and place her other hand on the block. Now try to start the engine via the electric start. If you still have a wife (or girl friend) your problem is no spark. If your ears are burning and your ass has been kicked and you have no chance of being laid, you have good spark.

We have to change fuel and air filters constantly, both will stall the motor.

Good one. I have a spark checker but I just can't get the thing to crank to check it. Replaced the starter solenoid and still just get a click same problem. I have a fuel cell in the car with an eclectic pump and I have checked the filter and it's clean. It's not a stock fuel filter. I'm gonna get a buddies Cdi box to try and see if that does it. Anyone have any ideas on what the relays do inside the battery box area ? Just trying to check everything before I pull the motor.
