Henderson 250 SMACKDOWN!

Tell Cory to keep the door open cause were coming in hot.
BAM!
I know. What a bunch of idiots, right? Suffice to say that a stock air box in Baja is about as useless as teets on a bull! We just can't stand prosperity! Anyway, we will just barely make it to tech on time today. All nighters SUCK!

As we are heading back home from yet another disappointing effort, I am reflecting back upon our rookie season in class 1900 and the underground. I will be frank. I always have been for I have nothing to lose and care not how I am viewed by others. I began the year with overwhelming confidence. Not so much in my ability to build anything I set out to, but more so in my cousins ability to market, develop, and succeed in his endeavors. I must say that we were completely blind sided by the results of our efforts. Humbled, perhaps, but I'm not quite ready to go there just yet. I am still confident in our car (and) drivers ability to prevail over any other package out there as it relates to rough terrain. Early on, the hook of off road racing for my brother and myself was the ability of a car and driver to banzai through the roughest of terrain. We didn't watch or become involved in off road racing to race at respectful speeds on tame roads, nor do I think most of you did. Gotta go. I'll finish this manifesto later,

So, when building the Monster Mav, I focused on suspension function and durability, unaware of the weak chain links associated with building and racing a UTV. The result was/is a UTV that can float over the rough stuff with ease. The first words out of my mouth when the car was set on the wheels for the first time was, "That looks badass!" With the exception of one re-valving of the rear shocks, the suspension is as built, and has been trouble free all season. Ever since then, even up to our displaying the car at SEMA, people always (I'm talking at least 25% of the time) say,"
That looks badass!". So I accomplished my goal of building a top performing bullet proof chassis. Great. Now, WTF is up with this cheesy clutch/CVT system. Whoops! Our badass car is now a "Fatass" car! Our hope is to transfer the suspension geometry to a longer wheelbase, ground up build, 4 seat platform minus 300 lbs. or so for next season. Through the grace of people like the Murray bros. and Nate at Alba, we learned a ton of what we should have already researched and applied to our current car. Our arrogance in 2013 was your gain. We have no plans on abandoning a UTV effort for next year. I'm sure there will be a press release in the next month outlining our commitment to the 2014 race season. I may or may not post our build next year. It is not weorth posting details on how a car is built when the majority of replies are negative. I learn, and enjoy sharing what I learn, where many others guards their design choices like it's gold or something. Everything I've exposed in these forums can be learned through existing tech books available to the general fabrication community. It's not my design or ideas as much as it is fundamental design and geometry. Its all been done before guys. There is no new secrets or innovations that will put you above the rest. I do have the benefit however of a seasons worth of racing experience to refine the efforts. I wont boast or brag anymore, because many of you have beat me down for it, and rightfully so. We know what we have to do to be a thorn in your side next season, and it will be done. Congratulations to the Murrays for making the full factory boys at Polaris work their asses of for the championship! Jason and Derrick are a class act, and we look forward to sharing with, and learning from them next season. C U at the races BITCHES!!!

Why so much Disappointment Reid??? You guys finally finished 1!:)....OK..Ok...I guess as much Smack as you have talked just finishing is not where you want to be. I get it. One thing to remember is....most the guys racing in the UTV class have a season on 6 of learing a thing or 2 under their belts.;)

Thanks Jim. Acknowledgment from a team of your stature is an attaboy for sure! Marc and I are just dumbfounded how we got our asses handed to us this season. Our confidence in racing an unfamiliar class really bit us hard. We know the Mav is fast,. just not yet reliable. Our first lap was 54 minutes, and that was with a flat tire. I believe it matched the fastest lap for the class in this race (or close). The tires are really vulnerable to sidewall failures, so Marc had to again "drive miss daisy" to avoid flats. Our sponsor is working on a tire for us for next season. You can see his disappointment in this post race report: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E6DXpOMNqS4
He is most bummed because we decided to bust butt and ready the car for this race to support the Murrays in their quest for the points championship. We just got the new motor back wednesday afternoon and ran out of time. We started 10-15 minutes late, and the rest was history. He's not used to struggling at desert racing. It's a hard pill to swallow for us both, given our efforts, but our results in 2013 are not the best tools to use for a new sponsorship pkg. in 2014. His past results in trucks and bikes, as well as his Freestyle business will carry us through next year, but there is a delicate balance between deposits and withdrawls in the sponsorship game. I'm kinda girly, but Marc is not, and he definitely is NOT a quitter! We will be there next year for sure. I would like to thank you and your team for the association and kind words this year. Hope you didnt get too much flack from others for being a nice guy to us!!! I believe we are looking at a full SCORE assault next season, so we'll see you most likely at Baja.

It would be a lot cheaper for you guys, to get beat in BITD rather than get beat in SCORE..... just saying

Reid: I'm the old guy on the Murray Team. I spoke with your bro after the race this weekend and wished you had walked over to share our disappointment of losing the championship in the last race of the year for the 3rd year in a row so we could congratulate you on the finish. This UTV racing isn't easy!

The Murray Motorsports only started racing <4 years ago and each year we've had a new car at or near the start of the season. You must expect problems when launching a new vehicle like you did this year......same as our Maverick did earlier in the year. Holz, Schueler and Cognito had lots of problems when they came out with their current UTV's but now they are getting real close to "bullet proof". IMO.....testing many miles is key to finding the weak points then building reliability. We all pound the $hit out of these vehicles to get up front!

We love this class because of the competition and the outstanding people on the various teams. Jagged X has shown me and others what true Sportsmanship is many times over the last few years. Heck, they changed our tire in V2R at the last pit because I didn't have the impact/jack out because it was a fuel only stop and our radio wasn't working. Thanks again JX!

We were glad to provide BiggJim & Cognito some race fuel during the 1000. We didn't need it once we fell out of the race so we paid it forward to a good group of guys who needed some help.

We look forward to working with Marc Burnett Racing, Dezert Toys (Corey Sappington) Racing and any other CanAm team next year to get that elusive BITD Championship!

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to all the teams.

See you in Parker! :D

Great post Bill. It is about 'UTV racing' and not just one brand. We need to build together. Happy Holiday's! Woot...woot! :)
