Looking at getting a couple 5 watt VHF handhelds for car to car and car to camp when in Ocotillo. I have no interest in investing in a high dollar 50 watt setup but was looking at these on the Rugged site http://www.ruggedradios.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=302_529_530&products_id=24 Are these 5 watt hand helds any good in the Ocotillo terrain for say at leats a mile when theres hills or washes? On night rides we often have one car scout out an area before others follow him down into a dead end or cliff and report back. Some comms would be nice vs the ol headlight flash we do now. I have tried the Wallyworld Motorola 2 ways and have not been happy at all.

HX-370 5 watt radios are great for what you want, get a hand mic so you can talk without holding the radio and you will be set.

Those HX-370's are great radios for what you want to do. I use them all the time riding Moto so I can attest to their durability. :p You will EASILY get a mile out of them, I'd say more like 3+ out there. Like was previously stated, a hand mic or a headset is a great addition to the radio for added ease of use.

I have 3 HX-370 with long range ducky antennas and they work great all over johnson valley for us. Hit Jason up @ Rugged Radios he's the man

Three ways to wire up the radio for a mic/helmet set, at Rescue Three we use all three, Hand Mic is a simple mic/speaker that can clip to a shirt, roll cage or something to hear over the engine at speed.
If you have a helmet you can get a helmet kit with speakers and mic that install into the helmet, a push to talk would work outside the radio on the interior, this year we purchased some lapel mic kits which include a small ear piece like a ear plug, a clip on mic and a small transmit button, this plugs into the top of the radio, then you can put your helmet on afterward. These are nice cause you can hear the radio outside the car.

Does Rugged price match? I found Overtons and Gander Mtn. sell the same radio for $129.

We will always try and price match any competitor to the best of our abilities, however on these HX-370's the lowest I can go is $150.

One of the benefits from us is that the radio comes pre-programmed with 40 common off road channels. If you were to buy the radio non-programmed ( say from Overtons), you would have to buy the cable and software separate.

The $150 HX370 deal was a limited offer on the website and to the general public, If anyone on here is interested feel free to PM me anytime for shipped pricing, I'd like to move some of these before the end of the year to help with inventory. I personally use one along with a few others here at Rugged for motorcycle applications and have been very happy with them. :)

As always feel free to contact me with any questions, We're here to help!

Hi RangerBurger,

You would need the HK-OFSP-M Helmet Kit, a CH-O harness, CJ-HX370 radio jumper, and a push to talk button to make it a complete setup

Here's a link to the helmet kit on our site:
http://www.ruggedradios.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=139_144&products_id=903

With the HX370, you would need the Car CH-O harness

Here's a link to the harness on our site:
http://www.ruggedradios.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=61_62&products_id=153

You will also need a cable jumper ( radio to harness) CJ-HX370

Heres a link to the jumper on our site:
http://www.ruggedradios.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=53_36&products_id=103

And last but not least a push to talk button ( runs off harness) PTT-VM-WP

Thanks for the info Rugged. I just ordered up everything you listed. Can't wait to try it out.:D

@ Moss, get at Lee (screen name: Fieldsinv) He's a radio tech type guy. Tell him what type of set up you want and he'll tell you what you need and where to get it. His base set up in his 5th wheel is nice.
