hi my name is Brett and I am 20 years old and I have muscular dystrophy and confined to a wheelchair. im looking into co driving for a utv team but with a disability I don't know were to start. all I want to do in this short life is race in the desert. racing is in my blood but my condition kind of through racing out the window. I just really want to know is this idea just a waste of time or not. if anyone can help send me a response please.

Hey Brett - you dream is NOT a waste of time. The cool thing about off road racing is that a sharp mind and a positive spirit are about all this is required for a co-driver. I have known many off road racers with all sorts of "disabilities" - many even drive.
Be honest with yourself - off road racing can be hot, cold, dusty, violent - can you handle the conditions?
Not sure if your location (adding that to your profile would help).
How to get into the RH seat - remember it is an earned seat - it will not just be handled to you. Go visit teams at races, offer to do race reports, live web updates, media stuff. Learn how to navigate, read & run GPS, make maps, coach, motivate & calm down a driver. Be that can - do guy.
Good luck with your dream.

Hey Brett,
Glad to here that you are passionate about getting in a car. If you would like I would be more than happy to have you ride in one of our cars when we practice at Lake Elsinore or Glen helen. Our Team does a lot of work with wounded Vets Like Warfighter Made. I personally have helped design parts and donated time for Disabilities.
Also something to think about because I have already had this conversation with my friend that is a disabled veteran. We did time trials on having him remove the seatbelts and himself out of the car. He did a good job but was not as fast as he should of been. He also had a hard time getting out of the car on his own. Now just think about a situation in the middle of the desert if the other person gets hurt or knocked out. How do you guys get out of a burning car? These are all real case scenarios and it makes it unsafe for both driver and passenger. If I were you I would start by trying to be a co driver in a short course vehicle. This is a safer start as any short course race has safety crew within 100 ft of each other.
