Baja 500 stats "just sayin"

Desert Toyz Cory S

DeSeRt ToYz RhInO - UTVUnderground Approved
So Its been a couple days now and I am finally rested up. I was just thinking about what a accomplishment it was to not only finish the Baja 500 but to finish second with a stock Maverick was huge. Almost all of my competition had me way out gunned. Here is my comparison list;
Jagged X; Lots of factory support, custom built after market long travel suspension, aftermarket axels, Kroyer $10000.00 built engine, Team Industries $1100.00 overdrive clutch, Long travel shocks, power steering, Huge GPS screen, Lots of test time, 3 or 4 chase trucks, film crew, 2 drivers, made it through the summit before the bottle neck and Prerunning.

Desert Toyz; Minimum factory support, all stock suspension and suspension conponents, stock axels, stock steer box, stock engine, stock clutch, no power steering, smallest GPS, no test time, 1 chase truck with 2 guys that had never been to Mexico, no film crew, 1 driver, got stuck in the summit bottle neck and no prerunning, we did probably have better beer than them "red and whites" but that would be are only advantage :D
Just sayin, and tooting my horn!!
I'll get'em at the 1000!!!

You got it done Cory!!

To help with your comparison, Jagged raced with a bone stock RZR XP900 H.O. jagged engine this race and Matt pre ran his section on Thursday but brandon never pre ran his start - rm230 section.

As for the camera crew... lol we will drop the UTVUG/Polaris Baja 500 recap I hope tomorrow!!

I'm happy with your results! 10 starters, 2 finishers, with one Polaris and one Can Am. That's a whole lot better than what's been the norm of only Polaris!

Happy to hear you got the finish Cory. If you beat me at the 1000, I will be the first person to shake your hand and buy you a beer. It is a tough race, as was the 500. But racing in Baja is incredible...don't you think?

BTW...in addition to what Joey said about running a bone stock engine and we also run bone stock Polaris cluches/belt. Power steering is stock and comes standard on the XP-4 we started with. Yes we had four chase trucks, because we have lots of friends that want to come down and help/hang. Yes we test a lot, is this a bad thing? Having two drivers for the 500 is not only an advantage, but it is also safer. FYI we did not make it over the summit before the bottleneck. It cost Brandon 30-40 minutes waiting for his turn to get up the hill, behind a long line of limited class cars. Our only competitive advantage was having the film crew. Haha. :p

I think it would have been more relevant to compare your Can Am to the Murry's, because you finished ahead of them and they have factory support, multiple chase trucks, testing, made it through before the bottleneck, had multiple drivers, long travel suspension, aftermarket axles, they pre-ran and had a film guy!

No doubt that racing in Baja on a UTV is a 'tortouse and the hare' kind of thing.

Let's all work together, rally the UTV vato's and get 20+ Ute's at the 1000.

good job cory sounds like our team bitd 1936. I wish joey would of had better coverage but i understand race dezert wasn't there and you got to pay bills/fund your trip. In the future i hope to here about other teams ex the other 8 that didnt finish what were they running and why didnt they finish. what happen to the green car and that bad ass can am someone buillt looked clean.

Good job bro if u need chase help or anything for the 1000 I know is boys from one gear racing will come help you with chase truck and anything, basically can have my team ( so only like two or three people hahaha ) for the 1000 if u want or need it... We will see you in our 1915 car at Vegas to Reno

Great run Cory, huge congrats! Can-Am should be really happy with your performance.

And congrats to the JX team for the "W"! Very cool that you guys were running a stock motor.

Yes Matt racing in Baja it like no other. It has been a long time since I had been in a vehicle driving in the Baja, I forgot just how tough it is. The terrain changes is like no other! Then throw in fog and the mist. I also have to say that the Mexican race fans are also like know other. I signed autographs the whole way through contingency and had no problems with fans or booby traps on the course. In fact many times the locals helped point us in the right direction. Even at 7am on the way in, we had locals cheering us on, a few kids were bowing down to us like we were off road gods! Viva Mexico. If any one wants to race in Baja and need someone to guide them through the process I will be happy to take them under my wing and teach them the ways of "Baja". If anyone wants to be apart of my Baja 1000 chase team please pm me or email me your info and I will put you on the list. I promise you will have a great time.

I wish we could of had better LIVE coverage as well but we had pretty darn good post race re-cap / results / photo coverage, I mean, better than any other UTV related site.

RDC was down there with us, but because of SCORE's decision to do LIVE coverage themselves RDC's coverage for Baja has changed to doing a couple videos during the race / event and then having post race story / photos like us.

UTVUnderground / RDC had a total of 12 people with us running around Baja filming the race. As is the case for all the BITD races and now both the 500 and 1000 Polaris has contracted us to film. This is HUGE for all UTV racers as this means I am able to actually afford to chase UTV's the entire race to provide photos of ALL racers vs. just see them off the line and then run with Trophy Trucks. Later today or tomorrow we will release what I think is our best race video EVER, its 12 minutes long and gives the UTV community a sense as to what its like to go to Baja for the race and event.

We offer all manufacturers the opportunity to take advantage of our media services. I think we have the best team not just in UTV but in off-road to make our videos. Mad Media is considered UTVUG's in house media partner now and its pretty hard to argue with their track record. While we did supply images to Can-Am for the Baja 500 for their own PR and advertising, we are hoping they will also jump on board and allow us to dedicate a crew to them to tell the story of racers like Sappington, The Murray's and now Burnett via video for the Baja 1000 and maybe a few BITD races in between. Of course, if you guys as fans and racers were to press on them to work with us as well then that could help show them the worth and the desire to see more!!!

Polaris has been really good to us, funding budget so that I can pay mad media to help cover these events. I would love to get to a point where I could fund an all inclusive, solid UTVUnderground race videos but there is 5 figure expenses involved in these race highlight videos. Polaris thus far, as well as John Deere and Can-Am a couple of times have allowed us to at least tell some of the stories surrounding the sport of UTV racing. We like to think we are doing the entire sport a service showing what our racers do in a cool and positive way.

To give you guys a sense of cost to produce a video like this.... An average BITD race video cost me upwards of $10,000.00 to produce via Mad Media. Of course, I could hire cheaper guys, but why? I would rather have no content then bad content, this site is known for its quality. Why is so much? Figure we bring out 4-6 guys on average, all of which are expereinced operators with off-road knowledge and experience. The equipment they shoot with costs anywhere from a $7,000.00 DSLR all the way up to $100,000.00 + RED cameras, Mad Media only shoots with the best. So Equipment cost is enormous. We got to get the crew to the races and give them a place to sleep so their is travel expenses for the crew, hotel rooms, food, fuel, etc. All our races are usually weekends so they are being paid overtime. We have been using Helicopter's more and more, there is another huge expense.... THEN you got to shoot the race, have the equipment cleaned because the desert is not nice to these expensive cameras, and we haven't even paid to have the video edited, voice over recorded, and so on and so forth.

When you go pro, this stuff is expensive!!! BUT, the quality is worth it and I hope you guys all agree!

SORRY FOR THE HI-JACK!! ahahahaha

Cory, you are a bad ass!!

The green Glazzcraft RZR driven by Alonso, best looking UTV I have ever seen BTW, had the new car blues. It had less than 15 miles on it I think when they took the green flag.

Marc Burnett made a rookie mistake, he mounted his exhaust directly below the fuel cell, boiled the fuel, vapor locked, DNF. Bad ass looking Can-Am, its fast as shit, but I think he needs to learn that the Maverick isn't a Class 7 truck that he is used to racing in. Its not gonna last as long driving like he was. He was frickin railing that thing!

I would like to back up Joey 100% on his explanation of the costs of filming. If you are looking at those numbers and think he's trying to overdramatize he isn't. The equipment used makes all the difference, in addition to having the post production crew to help with all the editing. In a race the normal person only sees the same car twice so you really have to be logistically sound and try and have a well groomed team to be able to get around and rely on everyones ability to take good footage. Personally got sick down there day 2 and still haven't fully recovered so there are always difficulties like anything else when trying to film. 100% respect to joey and his team for what they do of course they film alot of Polaris more than anything else but if they are the ones paying you to film then thats who you film.

Thanks Nick!! Everyone should know, I want to film for EVERYBODY! But to do it right its more than sticking a couple camera's around course and filming everyone through then making a video for everybody. To do it right, we have to dedicate crew to teams and to spots and they have to film their guys then move to the next spot to get them again. Thats so we can get as many shots as possible!!

I just wrapped up Voice Over for our Baja video, pending approval I should drop it this afternoon!!!

Great job to both of the finishers. Increasing the finishing numbers regardless of brand only boosts and legitimizes UTV racing:D. Unless its a spec class somebody is always going to have more money and better equipment. That is far from a guarranty of victory. Prep including pre-running go a long way toward a solid finish.

The media coverage is also a key component to the success of UTV racing. The more people that get to enjoy the coverage the more likely manufactures will get involved. This is a pay it forward kind of situation. Manufactures sell more and build stronger, faster machines which more people want!:D Everybody wins.

I always enjoy being at the races but you can't see everything so its nice to come home and get the scoop on what you missed. Of course it means even more when can't get to the race and have to view from your armchair.

this is what i was looking for just more info on other teams what happen why did it happen more of the underground appeal. again i understand you were down there for polaris to make a video you have to pay bills. all i was asking was more info on other teams since coverage wasn't there. i think you had one post because of reception and irc wasn't the greatest.just more info then matt parks won. there is no other website that cares about utv racers than utvunderground just was asking for more info.sorry its was tooken the wrong way.

I understand Rito, and I apologize for being so defensive. Somtimes I wonder if anyone even cares anymore. I know a handful do but its weird that we do a cool highlight video sometimes and get 1000 views. We need people to help us keep driving new members here and sharing all the cool stuff we are doing so that company's can help us continue to fund it.

On that note... sneak peek at the new Baja 500 video!!! [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ywjoO3wMEwc"]UTVUnderground Presents: 2013 SCORE Baja 500 - POLARIS RACING - YouTube[/ame]

great video! gets me all pumped up.hope to make the ave 300. it gets really tough when you have 2 jobs and still have to get everything prepped by yourself in your so called spare time lol.
