Doug Mittag sets NEW UTV Long Jump World Record (164ft)
The 2012 Soboba GP "Soboba Leap" jump contest went off bigger and better than ever! 6 contestants, all representing UTVUnderground.com lined up to hit the Soboba Leap to put on a show for the massive crowd and try to win the BIG $1000.00 1st place prize money.
The contest started with contestants drawing straws to see who would go first. Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series 2012 UTV champion R.J. Anderson would draw longest meaning he would be the first to leap! From there the competition took off! R.J.'s first jump was measured at 93 ft, 2 ft off of last years world record jump set by Tyler Winbury. That would be R.J.'s shortest jump of the evening as he would unleash the beast and go big on his next 2!
Doug Mittag rolled out in his Custom Off-Road Design ZX10 powered Kawasaki Teryx. Doug was hampered with a transmission problem leaving him with only 1 gear to run up the ramp. This would end up not affecting him him as much as we were all thinking. On Dougie's first run he launched a massive 118 ft, setting the new world record and raising the bar up higher than we ever thought it would go.
Not to be outdone in the competition was Soboba Leap first timer J.D. Marsh in his 2011 Polaris RZR XP900. This stock machine was only equipped with aftermarket cage and panels thus making his best jump of 124 ft that much more impressive!! The RZR XP-900 was FLYING!!!
Friend of the Underground and the reigning 2011 Soboba GP race winner, Beau Baron, in his brand new 2012 Polaris RZR-4 XP900 stepped up to compete as well. The only 4 seater of the bunch took flight landing a massive 105 ft from the take off point. Over 100ft in a STOCK 4 seat RZR XP900 was a blast to see and watch. Beau was going for it, trying to get as much of a run as he could. It was hard to not be impressed by the smoothness of the landing as the 1400lb machine hurled through the air.
The other 2 jumpers of the competition were UTVUnderground's own Dave Troxcil in his Kawasaki Teryx and Shaween "El Kido" Abdi in his new Polaris RZR XP900. The underpowered Teryx still went for it ripping off a 57ft leap and Shaween launched 104ft still shattering last years best jump for the competiton. In all it was really cool to see all these guys go for it for a HUGE crowd that hung out to see the leap go down.
In the end it would come down to R.J. Anderson and Doug Mittag to go for the win and the big payday of $1000.00 to the winner and $500.00 to second. R.J. would lay down the gauntlet with what would be (for a short time) a new world record jump of 151ft!! The crowd went nuts as R.J went all the way to the flat part of the landing, breaking a front suspension component yet still tearing off celebratory donuts for the standing room only crowd. His celebration would be short lived as Doug Mittag came raging out of the starting gate hitting the ramp at super high speed and sending his machine 164ft not only taking home the $1000.00 but also taking home the UTV Long Jump World Record.
Its going to take a new landing next year to allow these guys to go farther. I never thought we would outgrow this ramp and landing so fast but these kids went big. Not only shattering the record set in 2011 but also taking the only UTV jump competition to another level.
UTVUnderground wants to formally thank Jake and Faith Briones for putting on this sick event and letting UTVUnderground be such a large part of it. Without their support and organization of the GP as well as the big prize money this event would not go down. We also need to thank Pro Armor. Fred and Brad came out with camera's a-blazin' and we can't wait for the UTVUnderground/Pro Armor Soboba GP video to drop!!!
