So my video is posted on Youtube, and as expected there has been some negative feedback, OF COURSE! Mostly about me just wanting a hand out cause "I just want to go play in the desert for the weekend". I posted a reply and thought that it would be appropriate to post it here as well...
Hello, so I can see how you might think of my challenge as just a plea for a hand out as you suggest, however I'll make a few things clear. First of all, racing a race like the Baja 1000 requires a tremendous amount of time, resources, strategy and money. All of which I am personally offering to put up if this was to actually happen. I will personally have skin in the game! In all honesty, if Yamaha was to dropped a new YZX1000 on my front door, I would have AT LEAST $20,000 in expenses in prepping the vehicle with all of the safety equipment, preparing at least two chase vehicles to go to Mexico, buying all of the fuel for all of the vehicles, Mexican Insurance, food, hotel rooms for a team of guys, $3,500 in entree fees, plus a ton of other expenses that usually pop up. If I really wanted to take a joy ride in the desert I'd just go buy a new UTV and go play, but that's not what I am trying to accomplish here. I have a Polaris 2011 xp900 that I use to pre-run and play in, it's a great little machine but it has ALL of the upgrades I mentioned in my video because it NEEDS them... you say that Yamaha builds products worthy to meet the demands of the Baja 1000 so a test like this would be pointless... well what do you think about Polaris? Are there vehicles not AWESOME? So would you say that Yamaha is better than Polaris? My point... EVERY single one of the RZR's that I have seen out there... even as pre-runners, they ALL have "at least" suspension upgrades because they all know the stock stuff bends! The new Yamaha looks pretty cool, I just want to know if it could finish one of the most brutal races in the world without needing $10,000 in component upgrades! My goal would not be to beat it into the ground and see if I could break it, my goal would be to see if I could make a stock UTV last and finish. I don't know if there are many UTV's (Polaris, Wild Cat, CanAm) that could race the Baja 1000 stock and finish... Is the new Yamaha truly in a class of it's own? Is this UTV the exception? Finishing 49 of 50 desert races with a STOCK Ford Explorer is not easy, it requires a tremendous amount of discipline, skill and preparation. I believe I bring these attributes to the table. I'm not just some dreamer Joe Shmoe off of the street asking for a freebie! If Yamaha thinks their vehicle is good enough, then this would be a priceless marketing campaign that would cost them relatively little. How much did it cost them to go to Dubai so they could post a video of the YXZ drive up a dune and back... BORING!!!
