Staggs Racing 1982 Silverstate 300 BITD Race
Well two weeks before the race we had decided to change the springs on the rhino to a stiffer rate,so we headed out to barstow,ca to do some testing. About three miles into the test ride we hit a big whooped out wash and it bucked the rhino sideways and we had broken and bent many things on the passenger side of the utv. At this point I wasn't sure if we were going to get to make the race. I made a few calls to the guys
at Sadistic Iron Works, Cognito motorsports, MSA wheels and EFX tires and everyone above stepped up right away and
helped us out to get everything back together, and it came down to the line of thursday night! before tech day.
Arriving friday and going through tech and the drivers meeting we then drove up to Alamo,Nv to get some much needed
rest before the 6am start time, which came fast. We also didn't know the MPG yet as we wanted to figure that out so
we had to have our pit crew go to pit one which was way out of the way. Once we got to pit one and were able to figure
our MPG out we were quickly on our way to pit two. The race was running very smooth for us and the course and terrain was
awsome. I was also very impressed how well our Rugged Radio setup was performing. We had got to pit 4 and decided to check/add oil as we planned for our it crew to skip pit 5 and go straight to pit 6. We added oil and were off still running a flawless race at this point. Headed up through the mountains and canyons working our way to pit 6 and we had noticed the brakes were not working well, but had 20 miles to go to pit 6 so we decided to push on till pit 6 and then see what the isue was. Coming into pit 6 the crew had realized we had a flat tire. With the awsome quick help of a trophy truck pit crew we were off and on our way to pit 7. About half way to pit 7 we recieved over the radio that the first trophy trucks had passed pit 6 and were on our way it wasn't much longer after that that Robby Gordon,Bj Baldwin,Rob MacCachren would catch us and there helicopters gave us a good idea they were there so we pulled over and let them buy. We were caught at pit 7 by more trucks and buggys and would continue all the way to the finish line which cost us about 30 min in time with the pulling over,
dust etc. but in the end we would finish the SS300 with a flawless race and we had a great time in the rhino. Special Thanks goes out to all our help Cognito Motorsports,Sadistic Iron Works,MSA wheels,EFXtires,Rugged Radios,Billet King,JBS clutches,Helion Race products and Glass Alliance.
