short track/mx tires & wheels

I am building a short track/mx xp and am wondering what is the best tire (size, brand etc) and wheel (hiper, omf, dwt, etc) for racing on dirt. I found a General radial that weighs only 26 lbs which is 6 lbs less than itp's bajacross. also if 26" or 31" or something different. 14" or 15" wheel.not sure if im going down the right road with my research so i would love any input you are willing to share. thanks

This is not a simple question or answer. In general, the lighter the better from a performance standpoint. 12" wheel/tire combos seem to be lighter overall than a like diameter setup with a larger wheel.
Maxxis 4 Speeds are the lightest tire you'll find and work great for MX and short course if the track is groomed well or dry and hard. If the track is muddy, you'll be all over the place. On top of that, an XP's power is probably pushing the traction limit of a 4 speed tire. The 4 Speed is also a little short on height for an XP.

A combo that I really like on the XP is the Maxxis Ceros tires. I also happen to have them on my XP and I have run them on a built Teryx. Depending on how competitive you want to be, you might need to groove or sipe the tire.

The Bajacross is a durable tire but a poor choice in my opinion. Waaaayyy too heavy for MX application. One of the heaviest tires you'll find.

The General will be a much harder compound, and will be heavy. I think you'll be disappointed with traction and the performance due to rotating mass.

For wheels, all the companies you mentioned are good. Each have pluses and minuses in my opinion. I like the DWT Sectors but they don't offer them in a 14" or 15" diameter. Spun wheels will be the lightest but you chance bending them if you are jumping very hard.

Hope this info helped a little!

ran some 29 x 9 x 12 cerros with the DWT true beadlocks. switching to the hipers. The DWt wheels were light and did the job, no complaints. The tires are awesome. The wetter the track its not as good but on a regular track that hasnt been raining for a week they are awesome, especially in corners.

maxxis has the best tires by far. dwt tires are no good, but if your racing worcs next year i personally wouldnt get hipers, your better off with the dwts.omf makes the best wheel in my opinion

ive broken a dwt wheel because of a dwt tire getting a flat and i had a hiper blow apart on me out in idaho on my 3rd lap.never had any flats on my maxxis tires. the hipers on my quad are starting to crack and they dont hold air worth a crap.

Whatt?? Thats gotta be some bad luck for sure man. Ill report with the hipers, but rappys ggot em and I think karter44 ran em in worcs.

Time will tell. Just dont jynx it ;)

good luck to you if they dont hold up on my rhino then i know they wont hold up on a xp.they dont even hold up on my honda 450.i know i wont get them for my xp or recommend them to anyone else.

Hiper has a new center piece that is a lot stronger, haven't had any problems with them on the XP. I have broke 3 ITP T7 beadlock wheels from hitting rocks on the inner rim. I won't go back to cast wheels for WORCS or desert racing.

yeah itps are made for the grandma drives.there are the worst wheels by far, i broke 3 wheels in one race at the pala grand prix last year!
