ROCKSTAR Energy / Polaris UTV Wolfpack
The Merrell brothers recently embarked on the Racing Adventure of their lives, the 643 mile, 2 day, Best in the Desert Race, from Las Vegas to Reno.
In preparation, Wolfpack decided that the development of a new + 3" long travel suspension kit would help their desert car endure the grueling 643 miles of the "Best in the Desert" event. Several weeks were required to complete the design, development, and prototype processes for the new long travel kit with the help of Walker Evans Shocks and Eibach Springs. The Wolfpack crew spent many long nights and countless hours preparing the RZR, Jason Merrell and Anthony Sanchez worked tirelessly to finalize the first working prototype. Unfortunately, this process didn't provide much time for vehicle testing, and in true Wolfpack form, they decided that the ultimate test for their new long travel suspension package would be the race itself.
Wolfpack shows their determination to create a winning Desert program, and has the dedication required to compete at the top levels of the sport. The amount of time required to prepare the car for a race often comes down to the wire. Wolfpack relies heavily on its sponsors during crunch time, and appreciates the support that they provide to their Desert Program.
Wolfpack has had massive support from the following:
- Summers Brothers Racing, which built the custom axles last minute and even went above and beyond by driving out additional spare axles all the way to Las Vegas! http://www.summersbrothersracing.com/
- Walker Evans Racings', RZR support crew. Reid and Brian woke up early that morning, and rushed out to Barstow. They had to take an alternate route due to the Cahone pass fire, and spent several hours getting the shocks dialed in for the car. Afterward, Wolfpack rushed to Las Vegas in order to make tech and drivers meeting, with only a moment to spare. http://walkerevansracing.com/
It's companies like these, and great individuals like Anthony, Reid, Brian and Jose that truly make the difference when it comes to the UTV Wolfpack Racing Program, and without their combined efforts, Wolfpack could not have made it to the race.
Day 1: Wolfpack takes off the line, and within the first eighteen miles, silt creates a zero-visibility situation. Driving with caution they notice several vehicles ahead with drivers out of their cars. A huge pile up had occurred, several vehicles were involved, including the new Can-Am Maverick X3, and the Camburg Trophy truck, which had a vehicle on top of it. Passing these guys was a reality check of the dangerous possibilities that offroad racing can present, thank God everyone involved in the pile up was unharmed.
After getting through the wreckage, Wolfpack was off, driving at a good pace, and making great time in their own race. All the while enjoying the beautiful scenic desert of Nevada.
The car performed flawlessly until the clutch started to malfunction from all the silt. It managed to stay together just long enough for Wolfpack to roll across the finish line, and with luck on their side, taking 8th place.
Day 2: Wolfpack started off in great position on the line. The Terrain was treacherous, and suffered 2 flat tires within the first 50 miles, rolling into pit with 2 tire changes. They made it to pit 11 with no other issues. After leaving pit 11, Wolfpack was forced to slow it's pace due to visibility issues caused by the Trophy Truck traffic. They were struck from behind by a utv, and hit a rock resulting in a third flat tire.
The Merrell Brothers quickly changed the tire and were back in the race in less than 5 minutes. After suffering from a fourth flat less then 20 miles later in extremely rough terrain, Wolfpack lost 3 positions. They were able to regain 1 position quickly, and fought for position until the very end as they crossed the finish line, taking 7th place in their class, and 77th overall including Trophy Trucks with a total of 231 drivers.
Wolfpack was able to complete the race with a chase crew of two, and the additional help provided from Shaw Motorsports and RCG OFFROAD during pit stops was greatly appreciated.
Wolfpack completed the toughest, most grueling, endurance race in North America, and dominated the terrain. Wolfpack had an amazing experience competing in the "Best in The Desert"- Las Vegas to Reno race, and will be back next year to battle for that #1 spot!
