Oregon - Surprising Additions to Mount Hood Wilderness

The Lyin King

Public Lands Advocate
"I have to hand it to Sen Ron Wyden (and to former Sen. Gordon Smith, and Reps. Earl Blumenauer and Greg Walden, who also did plenty of heavy lifting) for guiding the Lewis and Clark Mount Hood Wilderness Bill through Congress.

I never imagined they could have found another 125,000 acres of land to preserve in the Mount Hood National Forest and the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area.

But they did, including several rivers to protect as wild and scenic.

The national forest lands of the northern Oregon Cascades already have six wilderness areas designated by Congress. With the passage of the recent wilderness bill on March 30, just about every snippet of land that hadn't been marred by a road has been added to one or the other of the wilderness areas."
