Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest Travel Management DEIS Available

The Forest Service (FS) has announced the release of the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for Motorized Vehicle Use on the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest, located in southwestern Oregon.

During a 45-day public comment period, the agency will conduct a series of open houses to review the environmental document, including maps and alternatives, to discuss the motorized route designation process and to seek public comments.

This comment period ends May 11, 2009.

My Response to an Interested Party

Robert,

I did some leg work this morning to assist you with this. I spent 10 minutes on Google using a keyword search "Oregon ATV OHV Motorcycle Clubs" and came up with the following list.

The following group appears to be the "Mothership" and would be a good place to start and likely the best bang for your buck in collecting "on the ground" information.

OMRA, Inc.
PO Box 6975
Portland, OR 97228

They have an extensive list of clubs on their site and may be able to blast out an “on-the-ground reports request†. . . Welcome to OMRA-Online

The BRC would like to help further. Here's a quote from one of my contacts . . .

"I think the obvious way we could help would be to include all the possible clubs/groups we could in a major BRC Alert or Oregon Alert for them –getting everyone in the loop; passing along info of critical concern; and giving folks a central clearing house for now.

Maybe the clean way to do this is to have him collect the database of contact info so I (we) could start to email with them and lay the groundwork. Get everyone connected at some level. Then we could go from there."

I also made the suggestion that . . . "If the BRC would include a little blurb with their “Action Alerts†that pertain to DEIS stuff which says something like . . . “We need local clubs and individuals to contact us at XXXX with “on the ground†information that can be used in a later Action Alert as “talking points†for our members who want to help but do not recreate in this specific area . . . . bla, bla, bla. This would assist folks in the area affected by allowing them direct way to feed information to the BRC which can then be fed back to those non-locals who want to help."

There would be a lot of work involved in this, are you up for it? Let me know if you want to take this on, otherwise I'll see if I can find the time to gather the "database of contact info" (primary contact email addresses).

The thing about the "Public Comment" period/DEIS stuff is that if groups and individuals don't get in now, they aren't able to participate in the process any further, like during the EIS comment period.

Thanks for wanting to get involved, I know this is a bit much for a guy who just wanted to shoot off an email in support of the effort.

Sincerely,

Bob

Anybody willing to chip in and gather the required information?
