Hey guys, new member here. Up until now I have mainly been a quad guy, looking for the right sxs for me and my wallet. Mainly what I will be doing with the sxs is riding trails in river beds, with some moderate hills and woods riding. I will probably hit a few recreation parks a year with minimal sand and rock crawling as I am located in central Indiana. So most of the riding will be on back roads, trails, and we operate a row crop farm so I may get minimal use out of it there also. As of now I am looking at a few 900XP models.. one is a 13 with 2800 miles, the other is a 12 with 2000 miles, a few 800S models.. one a 2011 with 2600 miles and the other a 12 with 1600 miles, and a 2013 Can Am Commander 1000 XT with 70 hours. Which model sounds like the best option for me? Just want something reliable that is practical. Any input is appreciated! Can add pics of the options i'm looking at if anyone is interested in seeing them.

Taking all the info given,I personally recommend the Yamaha YXZ 1000,I believe you will find the drive train is best for your applications. The sequential trans gives you more control of the vehicle in all types of terrain. The diff lock feature for crawling those rocky areas, and no belts to worry about.with stock platform some shock tuning and a few safety features and it makes a good short course or worcs series car. I suggest try before you buy if possible Take Care

Thanks for your input TOYZAROUND, but a ways out of my budget with the Yamaha. All of my options above that i listed are priced at $12,000 or less which is the most I can spend right now. Not looking to do any racing either just toying around. Sorry if this forum is directed towards racing only, i just wanted an unbiased opinion on what choice i should make

For what you described above and the price range you are talking I would go with the 900XP that has the lower miles/hours. It has plenty of power and plenty of suspension for what your talking about doing. Tons of them out there so parts are a dime a dozen and relatively cheap.

You will possibly need to change ball joints and or wheel bearing on a higher mileage vehicle, I would also inspect the intake after the air filter to make sure no dust has gotten past the engine either.

Not sure if your mechanically inclined but a compression test would also tell you the shape the pistons and rings are in on a used unit.

It is a lot easier to change a belt out on the trail then it is a clutch!!!

If you are just cruising around and want to use it for work then you might check out the Teryx.

How many miles is "too many" miles for a RZR? I know thats not really an easy thing to pinpoint, and its probably completely based on the person behind the wheel, but is there a number that is just too much to work with? I don't want something that I am going to have to spend as much time working on as I do riding it.

Thanks for the input, tatum. I think the Teryx is a little bit too tame for me, plus we have a mule that we use on the farm. Nothing against the Teryx, looks like a great machine. I'd just like something with better offroad capability and more power than that of the Teryx

Hey I'm a performance guy all the way, I just wasn't sure by your post what you were looking for.

It is hard to put a mileage as "too many" on a UTV. As long as it has been taking care of and maintained on a regular schedule this things will go a lot of miles and a lot of hours...I have seen some xp1k's advertised with 5k miles and they have only been out since 2014.

For me personally i would be hard pressed to buy one with over 3000 miles, i think that would be my ceiling.

You need to look at the overall condition of the vehicle, are the floor boards worn out or cracking from excessive use, brake pad life left? do front or rear tires rock back and forth or sound loose (worn out bearings). Lots of different things to look at.

I also like to take the engine hours and divide it to get an miles per hour for the life of the vehicle, it is not perfectly accurate but if the guy says he used it as a Sunday cruiser for his family and you average like 40mph probably not the case.
