Just how hard is it to get a BLM permit, read this:

Quick note after just reading the memorandums. Honestly, that verbage puts ALOT of pressure on the managers that sign any permits. Seems to indicate that they are taking alot of personal career risk on any permits they sign. Definately wouldn't make me very eager to sign permits if I was in that position. Just thought the verbage was interesting.

Yep, exactly. It's murderous wording.
I was figuring a non-organized event, just a group of friends from this board show up and do the run, informal, just a bunch of folks out for the day, from Barstow to Stateline.

I was dreaming of doing a Barstow to Stateline poker run to benefit the local Free Clinic.
If getting insurance and a bond isn't a pain,, getting that permit sure as hell would be.
I may try getting a break through our local congressmans office. I don't hold much hope, but perhaps they could put more pressure on the BLM to loosten up.
Their is no reason for them to be so tough on everyone.

I can tell you first hand that while it is difficult, it is not impossible.
The process is not extreamly attractive to a first time permit request, and some long standing SRP holders are having trouble meeting the requirements, but it can be done.

If you are going to attempt to obtain a permit I suggest that you budget a the time to apply a year in advance of your date. The BLM is drafting a new application to aid in the process, so your first step would be to pick that up and take a look.

The BLM has 30 days to respond to your application and tell you the Cost recovery costs to the SRP applicant. You can be assured that pretty much all SRP's will fall under Cost Recovery.

If you have any specific questions regarding getting an SRP, send me an email. I have spent a considerable amount of time on the subject since August 14th, 2010. We recieved the highest rating possible from the BLM in our post event review for KOH, so while permits are tougher to get, you can still be successful, it just requires more time, money, and work.
