I need help getting Started

First off I want to say thank you for reading my post. I am active duty military and have been for some time now. I love what I do each day and look forward to doing it until I retire. The drawback of being in the military is that your family suffers with constant deployments and time away from home. I have two sons that I love to death. My oldest is about to turn 16 this year and we are not as close as I want us to be. I grew up working on anything with a motor with my dad and we spent a lot of time bonding on the dirt roads on New Mexico. With my oldest soon to be moving out of the house and off to college I am looking to spend more quality time with him. I own a dirt bike and an atv already and was thinking about a utv as a way our whole family could go out and ride. Then I stumbled across YouTube videos of Baja style utv racing. All I could think about is racing side by side with my sons. I have had this idea in my head for a few weeks now and am ready to seek answers from the pros. I am not out to race to win just to have fun with my family and make new friends but you never know. I am not loaded with money so I need to watch what I spend. In mid-summer I will be moving to El Paso for my next assignment. Is there anyone around this area that is racing? Can I just buy a RZR and strap in and race? Can my son race at 16? Where can I find race tech rules for races in my area? I have so many questions I donâ€™t want to list them all. If you could get give me a push in the right direction that would be great. Welcome to UTVUnderground.com. First off thank you for your service. The RZR is great platform to start with. With some very minor mods your son could race it and still keep it affordable.

Welcome to the site and like Rusty said, thank you for your service.

Racing is quite the undertaking and with limited time and income it can be extremely difficult to make happen. El Paso isn't exactly the hot bed of UTV racing either, however I know there were some Baja Racing Texas events behind held not too far away. Robert Usnick may be able to add some insight as he is a desert racer based out of Texas. I will alert him to this thread.

My advice would be to get yourself a good 4 seat machine and go have fun with your family. Racing is stressful, fun and you can certainly bond but its a lot of work. While camping and trail riding is much more relaxed! So again, my advice is find a 4 seat machine you like and go have fun with it then decide if racing is a direction you want to go.

x2 thank you for your service and welcome to the underground .I would say just list all your questions and try and get every thing you want to know on this one thread so down the road you can use it as a starting place and go from there for info . Also look in the classified (on this site ) at some of the race utv's for sale that all ready built compared of starting a build with the little time you have .

Joey is spot on. Plus race cars don't always make very good play cars.

But there are going to be lots of good cars for sale soon. You can easily save 50% and get a proven race car. That will go along way towards starting a successful (IE enjoyable) racing endeavor.
