General pricing question for UTVs

I am currently looking at purchasing a UTV. What I am trying to understand is, why are USED UTVs so expensive? I looked at the blue-book & blackbook values of 1 year old used machines, and I am seeing a 50% "drive-off-the-lot" tax.

Hence, a brand new Can-Am 1000R (http://can-am.brp.com/off-road/side-by-side/maverick/maverick-max-x-ds.html) is about 23K with taxes.

The same (or almost the same) used model, on KBB, is 12k (http://www.kbb.com/motorcycles/can-am/maverick-max-1000r/2015-can-am-maverick-max-1000r/trade-in/)?

If I look on Craigslist, I see people selling these things for 18500, so I am asking.. what gives? Do people really get 18500 for a UTV that has a 12K value on KBB?

Thanks!

The kbb isn't accurate when it comes to off-road vehicles. Especially since most aren't left stock and have thousands in aftermarket upgrades.

Miraculously UTVs somehow hold their value incredibly well. I still can't understand how that works....

Seems to depend a lot on location. I have recently looked at a Turbo Mav with 50 miles for 16,900 and a few XP1k's for 14k.

Location is a big part of it.

Look at Abernathy's Polaris in Tennessee. You can but a new 1000 cheaper there than you can buy a used on the Phoenix Craigslist.

Nobody looks at any of those values when buying used UTV's, they are all over the bored, KBB seems to run low and NADA seems to run high.

When buying used a lot of people ask for a lot more then they end up getting. The asking price is just a number to get the conversation started.

I'm considering a Yamaha Wolverine any positive or negative input would be appreciated.
