Desert Toyz Racing Team SS 300 story

Desert Toyz Cory S

DeSeRt ToYz RhInO - UTVUnderground Approved
At 5:30 am on Saturday May 3 the Desert Toyz built Can-Am Maverick lined up in the 21st starting position in the Pro UTV class. There were 28 total UTV’s entered. Scott Sappington , the older brother of Cory Sappington, drove the first 172 mile of the race with Tyler Dixon navigating. They were the 2nd fastest UTV to complete the first 25 miles, but the thick dust was too much to stay clean. Around mile 27 Scott hit a big rock that knocked the bead of the tire off the wheel. While changing the flat tire all the UTV’s that Scott and Tyler passed went rolling by. Now back in the 21st position again Scott began to charge his way back towards the front of the pack. As Scott approached pit 2 while passing another UTV, he hit an embankment and rolled the Maverick. Both Scott and Tyler were ok, they got out and quickly lifted the Maverick back onto its wheels. The only damage to the Maverick was a broken swaybar link. Scott continued on to pit 3 rm102, somewhere along the way he tagged another rock and got another flat. At pit 3 the Desert Toyz team replaced the broken swaybar link, replaced the spare tire and fueled the Maverick. Unfortunately many UTV’s passed us during this pit stop. At this point the leaders in the class had a hour and 45 minute lead. Desert Toyz race strategy had changed, from going for the win, to just trying to race clean and pick off as many UTV’s as possible. Scott did stay clean from rm 102 to 172 and he did pass a few UTV’s. Now it was Cory’s turn to drive. After leaving pit 5 Cory quickly made up time and passed 4 or 5 UTV’s. At pit 6 rm 212 Tyler got out and the new guy Jessie got in to navigate. Jessie had only ridden in the Maverick 5 miles, prior to this race. Cory continued to charge hard and stay clean, passing a few more UTV’s before the finish. After 300 miles of racing the Desert Toyz Can-Am Maverick placed 11th. With 3800 hard race miles on their Maverick Desert Toyz Racing has defiantly proven that Can-Am builds very durable machines.
