RENO, Nev.—Way out west they have a name for rain (Tess), wind (Mariah) and fire and the fire is the SCORE Dusty Dozen--the ‘Young Guns’ of the 2014 SCORE World Desert Championship. All less than 30 years old, the SCORE Dusty Dozen represents a cross section of the next generation of SCORE desert racers that have made and continue to emblazon the world of desert racing with their flamboyant skill and dynamic persona.
SCORE, the world’s foremost desert racing organization, features 25 Pro and 5 Sportsman classes for cars, trucks, UTVs, motorcycles and ATVs.
The SCORE Dusty Dozen represents each of the categories of classes with six who race in SCORE Trophy Truck, the marquee SCORE racing division for high-tech, 850-horesepower unlimited production trucks.
Carrying big sticks but not talking softly through the tortuous deserts of Southern California and the foreboding and mysterious badlands of Mexico’s mysterious Baja California peninsula, the first SCORE Dusty Dozen lineup of contenders-not-pretenders, consists of SCORE Trophy Truck dead-eyes Bryce Menzies, Carlos “Apdaly†Lopez, Luke McMillin, Jessica McMillin, Justin Davis and Jason Voss, Class 10 bandits Cody Robinson and Rafael Navarro IV, Class 1 hombre Justin Matney, SCORE Ironman motorcycle freestyler Tony Gera, Pro ATV bronc-buster Javier Robles Jr, and Class 19 UTV jockey Branden Sims.
“The SCORE Dusty Dozen might sound cute, but from our perspective these youthful competitors are the future of SCORE International desert racing,†commented Roger Norman, SCORE CEO/President who himself is a former SCORE Trophy Truck champion racer. “The ‘Young Guns’ are pushing SCORE desert racing to exciting new levels of achievement as well as developing the foundation for fulfilling the vision we have for SCORE and the world of desert racing motorsports.â€
The growing youth ranks in the SCORE World Desert Championship are creating expanded opportunities for SCORE’s sponsors, its broadcasters and its licensees. From apparel to energy drinks, SCORE’s youth movement is a powerful platform for marketers worldwide. SCORE will have a large presence at Licensing Expo in Las Vegas this week to reinforce its growing youth demographic to an international contingent of licensees. In the coming weeks, SCORE will also announce its largest media event in history in advance of the 2014 Tecate SCORE Baja 1000.
With their stars lighting up the desert sky, the inaugural SCORE Dusty Dozen—Young Guns of the 2014 SCORE World Desert Championship were selected by a special committee of SCORE race officials and motorsports news media.
While veteran SCORE ‘gunslingers’ continue to hold multiple places in the overall results of races, the SCORE Young Guns certainly make their presence felt. In last weekend’s 46th Tecate SCORE Baja 500 in Ensenada, Mexico, nine of the top 20 overall 4-wheel vehicle finishers were SCORE Young Guns.
Second and now even third-generation desert racers become more and more prominent in the lineups at SCORE World Desert Championship events and the SCORE Dusty Dozen are prime examples of all the myriad next gen of SCORE desert racing hot-shots.
To date, none of this year’s SCORE Dirty Dozen have yet to capture the ultimate victory – an overall win at the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000. Perhaps 2014 will be the year for the Young Guns to break through in the toughest point-to-point desert race on the planet.
