As far as I know they are racing the turbo Mav's at the 500. But they have to run a stock ECM issued by SCORE at tech.
Does the turbo mav share the same tranny as the prior ones? I know that up to the end of last year, the only available mod that brp had gear ratio wise was a 37 tooth replacement pinion gear for the stock 36 tooth gear in the transmission. Marc wanted to try it out, I believe it was in the baja 500, and it was a slug. We couldn't even pull the stock shorter gear, so I wasn't sure what he was thinking. Point is, that the tranny labored a lot more with that extra tooth on the pinion. Perhaps they ran that set up.
Regarding the rpm of the tranny output shaft, it is way below what you were thinking. On the BAM, with 30" tires, stock tranny gear, and stock 1.36:1 diff ratios, our driveshaft rpm at 75 mph was only 3,300 (3,300 rpm/3.6 gear ratio x 7.27 tire rolling radius/5,280 feet per mile x 60 minutes in an hour = 75 mph. This data was crucial for me as we ran the alternator off of the driveshaft, and I needed to know at what speed the alternator would kick in. I believe it was at 16 mph the alternator began producing at 25 amps, and by 40 mph, it was pumping out nearly 80 amps. We were at about 100 amps at 75 mph, if my sloshy memory serves me correctly.
I am sold however, on fresh Trans and diff oil each race with well placed breather vent tubes. Lucas oil, synthetic racing, straight 140 wt. in the trans, and straight and gooey 250 wt. in the diffs. The new turbos have a more effective clutch than we had in the BAM, so youd know more than I whether that helps or hurts the situation. Thanks to the sabatuers at BRP, we never got to try one. Those knuckleheads just didn't like me, and our equipment was inferior as a res
ult. Hell, they may as well have teamed up with Wiley Coyote and changed the course markings just before we went by!
Man, I'm really turning into a whiner in my old age. Last year's winner, this year's whiner!
Well, I would have to go with the Mav, as long as it's a 4 seat chassis. That way, I could take advantage of the motor location and build in quick access to the clutch. It's hard to deny the support that is available from polaris though. In the short time that I was involved with their brand, they really impressed me with the accessibility of their engineers, and the knowledge they possessed. Hard to believe that the same group of engineers thought that plastic bearing cages would last in a differential, or that a driveline with u joints not properly clocked and at indifferent working angles and floating rear driveshaft wouldn't prove to be troublesome. The Can am is by far the better engineered car. The Arctic cat guys got it right with their front suspension, but the chassis is not well thought out, not to mention too lightly built. In the end, any good builder can build a winner from any of the three manufacturers. To be honest, and I always am, I could've scaled the mav back quite a bit, and with what Marc brings to the table, we still would've taken the championship. So now that you are allowed to talk what machine would you choose to desert race, since you are not being paid.
Johnny, you're like that hot chick that walks past and the trophy wife catches her man staring. When you got the goods....you got the goods. What's a guy gonna say?
Besides, I'm kind of relieved not to be the guy having to prep against you. I will say though, in Marcs defense, that you would've had your hands full (as if theyre not full enough already) had he not switched brands. After all that money, time and prep, 17 mins of speeding penalties gotta hurt. Finishing up front is a lot of work, falling behind is easy. C'mon slappy, let's get with it!
How about your top 3 teams to podium and your favorite to win.
Jagged cuz their steady every race
Utv because they have the nicest chase trucks.
Nygren LSR been steady and Dan finished most races
McFarland, Wilson front runner at 500 Sur, Murray bros, Sappington if he can pack enough belts, Lambert but new car could be good or not, Burnett too many issues this year maybe it's time, the rest of the field I don't know could be some contenders there. I'd say Utv and Jagged 2:1 odds to podium...call it even.
Anyone care to pick long shot?
