Most people are interested in how your race went including the set backs which really are the most interesting and informative aspects. We had a great start passed speedy Gonzalez and The Roadrunner then broke and went home is boring.
So what broke and what went wrong? There are 14 stories that ended with the car on a trailer before the finish. Like to hear those stories.......
I'll go first 1958.....started second and our race plan was to take it easy for the first 200 miles not try to win the race or roll the car in the the first 100 miles or even try and hold the position with at least 2-3 turbo cars starting right behind us. We were running tires we've never raced before Tensor regulators so we are a little unsure. We asked around and against my better judgment went with the recommended 15 psi which I thought was low. We had text anywhere on the car so I wanted it to be extra sure that all phones are connected and I thought they were. We had 16 spare tires spread out along the course and 100 gallons of race fuel. Turns out at the last minute we didn't have enough chucks for all the fuel to be spread around to different pits where we needed it..we had the large field drugs but didn't have time to neck them down so they would fit in her gas tank so we had just one VP jug on the truck and a 55 gallon drum.....somehow are going to have to make do. Our first. Was 80 miles an hour we read run perfect up to that point.. I should mention well you never can be sure I felt the car was is in good shape and prepped as it's ever been we carried 2 spare rear axles and a spare front axle a few other parts I felt we could fix anything that broke. We had every conceivable spare part in the truck except for a master cylinder and probably one or two parts that I can't even think of We had a complete drivetrain all four corners steering clutch axles he see you regulator we had a ton of parts.
Anyway I had about rm 100 we had our first flat on a small rock. Or use their spare one about 3 miles and destroyed a wheel obviously a rock i never saw. We had no other spares and we had to wait for the Chase traffic circle back by this time the fog was setting in while we waited and we were getting sacked in After some time we realized that we are the only destroy the wheel at the tire was still good not flat it all so we remounted it on on the first wheel and had only a small dent in it. A group of local helped us and they did the gasoline and fire trick to set the bead and a small hand pump and 2+ hours later he fixed i A group of local helped us and they did the gasoline fire trick to set the bead and a small hand pump and 2+ hours later he fixed it. And fortunately the fog it said in by this time and we had 80 miles to the driver change the times going in circles trying to find the course that was pure hell really. Finally got to Rm 200 and made the driver change they took off and about rm 335 cracked the master cylinder and had no brakes. They tried frantically to reach us with the text anywhere but we weren't receiving any of the messages and turns out the phone in the Chase truck that was swap during the driver change wasn't programmed correctly and we weren't getting the car position updates and had no idea where the car was. We tried weatherman and asking other cars come through we just couldn't locate him finally hours later we were looking for them in the middle of nowhere and we found him just the other side of the nasty silt section near the highway. The car was actually in really good shape but we didn't have the part and we were so far behind with the two flats early in the race from under pressure I was under pressurizing the tire The car was actually in really good shape but we didn't have the part and we were so far behind with the two flats early in the race from tire w low pressure we felt the clock is running out and there wasn't enough time to search for the part..
The Tensor tires were awesome they would've been great and we put the proper pressure in them the Method wheels we've been running a long time........never exploded one like that obviously caused by the tire issue. Ironic in the end we had 16 spare tires yet when we needed one we didn't have any and the car is ready and prepped as it was we came up short on prepping and planning the logistics...... Equally important in a long race like the 1000.. I'm pretty sure of all the cars that didn't finish the 1000 ours was perhaps in the best shape after the race. I'm sure with an easy break fix the car was capable of finishing the race. Post race teardown indicated only a slight tear in one front axle boot.
