Menzies in SCORE Trophy-Truck, Martin in Class 1, Esposito in M/C
Ruiz in ATV all draw pole slots for 43rd Tecate SCORE Baja 500

Round 3 of five-race 2011 SCORE Desert Series to be held June 2-5 in Ensenada, Mexico

LOS ANGELES—Rising Southern Nevada desert racing star Bryce Menzies along with Dan Martin, Shane Esposito and Roberto Ruiz all drew pole positions in their respective divisions during Saturday’s computerized drawing for starting positions in the upcoming 43rd Annual Tecate SCORE Baja 500 desert race. The draw was held at the SCORE headquarters in Los Angeles.
Round 3 of the five-race 2011 SCORE Desert Series, the World’s Foremost Desert Racing Series, will feature over 250 entries, competing in 28 Pro and 7 Sportsman classes for cars, trucks, motorcycles and ATVs, will be held June 2-5 in Ensenada, Mexico.
SCORE is in its 38th year as the world’s foremost desert racing organization, this race is traditionally one of the most popular events on the SCORE schedule, and most the world’s best desert racers are expected to be in action at this year’s 43rd anniversary of the Tecate SCORE Baja 500, the original desert race produced by SCORE on July 26, 1974.
With late entries accepted up to race morning, entries are expected from 25 U.S. States, and 10 countries. The green flag will drop for the race at 6 a.m. on Saturday (June 4) for the motorcycle and ATV classes in the Tecate SCORE Baja 500, followed by the car and truck classes three hours after the last ATV at approximately 10 a.m. The elapsed-time race will start and finish in front of the Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center on Boulevard Costero in the heart of Ensenada, leaving and returning into the city through the spectator-laden Arroyo Wash.
Las Vegas Menzies, 23, winner of this year’s SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge in January, received the first starting position for 4-wheel vehicles in the No. 70 Menzies Motorsports Ford F-150. In just his fourth SCORE race, this is also the first time in his budding career that he has drawn the coveted starting position in the marquee SCORE Trophy-Truck division for high-tech, 800-horsepower unlimited production trucks.
A championship short-course stadium racer since 2007, Menzies also has one season championship in an open-wheel desert race car class in a domestic desert-racing series. Prior to this season, where he stands third in points, his only other SCORE start was last year’s Tecate SCORE Baja 500 where he finished seventh in SCORE Trophy-Truck in his SCORE debut.
“I guess it would be an understatement to say how fortunate I’ve been in my racing career so far and drawing the first start in the SCORE Baja 500 is something some drivers what years to get and I got it in just my fourth SCORE race,†commented Menzies, who finished sixth in the MasterCraft Safety Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 in March. “My dad makes Menzies Motorsports happen and without his unbelievable support and the great crew he has put together I wouldn’t even be close to developing as much as I have as a young racer.â€
In Saturday’s drawing there were a SCORE 31 SCORE Trophy-Trucks had officially entered.
Martin, Monrovia, Calif., will start first in the unlimited Class 1 in the COPS Racing Chevy-powered Penhall open-wheel desert race car.
Esposito, Lake Elsinore, Calif. will lead the motorcycles and his team into the Baja desert on a Kawasaki KX450F in Class 22 for open motorcycles.
Ruiz, El Centro, Calif., is leading a multi-rider Class 25 ATV team on a Honda TRX450R.
While late entries will be accepted up to race morning, as of the Start draw, the Pro 4-Wheel vehicles classes with the most entries are: SCORE Trophy-Truck (31), Class 1 (20) and Class 1-2/1600 (10).
Leading the Motorcycle classes in entries so far are Class 22 (7).
Class 24 leads the ATV classes with six entries to date.
Among the Sportsman classes, SPT Motorcycles 450cc and over has 15 entries.
Last year’s overall race champions are also among the early entries in this year’s race. The overall 4-wheel winner in 2010 was the son/father team of Andy and Scott McMillin, National City, Calif., who drive the No. 31 Ford F-150 SCORE Trophy-Truck. Recording the fastest overall time while leading all motorcycles in last year’s race was the JCR Honda Racing Team riders Kendall Norman, Santa Barbara, Calif./Quinn Cody, Buellton, Calif., on a Honda CRF450X while the fastest ATV was the Honda TRX700X riding by Wayne Matlock/Josh Caster, El Cajon, Calif./Wes Miller, Fallbrook, Calif.
The McMillins will start second behind Menzies in SCORE Trophy-Truck while Norman/Cody will be the second motorcycle off the line in Class 22 and Matlock and his team will be the third ATV to start, racing in Class 25.
Competition in the SCORE Desert Series has never been closer as veteran SCORE Trophy-Truck driver Jesse Jones and young gun unlimited Class 1 racer Justin Davis lead their respective classes and are tied at the top of SCORE point leader board following the recent 25th MasterCraft Safety Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250.
SCORE points are based on starting, finishing, placement and number of official starters within each class. Jones, 45, of Litchfield Park, Ariz., and Davis, 17 of Chino Hills, Calif., not only lead their respective classes following Round 2 of the five-race 2011 SCORE Desert Series, they are tied for the SCORE Overall point lead with 139 point each.
Jones, the reigning SCORE Trophy-Truck and SCORE Overall point champion, has finished a very close second in both of the first two races of the season in the No. 1 Jones Motorsports Ford F-250 SCORE Trophy-Truck, while Davis, last year’s SCORE Lite point champion, has won Class 1 in both races in the Green Army Motorsports Chevy-powered ESM open-wheel desert race car.
In addition to season class point championships, the racers are also competing for part of the nearly $400,000 in cash purse and contingency postings each race. Drivers in the Pro car and truck classes are attempting to earn prestigious SCORE Toyota Milestone Awards given to all car and truck class drivers who complete every required mile of the five-race season. Being presented by Toyota Motorsports for the 26th consecutive year, a total of 38 drivers remain eligible after Round 2 of the 2011 SCORE Desert Series. Pre-running begins Friday in Mexico on rugged 454.69-mile
Course for 43rd annual Tecate SCORE Baja 500 desert race
June 2-5 event in Ensenada has entries from 25 States, 7 countries;
Official Course map available at Score International Off Road Racing

LOS ANGELES—With the release of the official course map, GPS files and course notes this week, pre-race activity increases significantly starting Friday when the world’s best desert racers officially begin their pre-running and course logistics activities for next month’s 43rd Annual Tecate SCORE Baja 500, the second-oldest desert race in the world.
Round 3 of the five-race 2011 SCORE Desert Series, the World’s Foremost Desert Racing Series, will feature nearly 250 entries, competing in 28 Pro and 7 Sportsman classes for cars, trucks, motorcycles and ATVs, will be held June 2-5 in Ensenada, Mexico.
SCORE is in its 38th year as the world’s foremost desert racing organization. This race is traditionally one of the most popular events on the SCORE schedule, and most the world’s best desert racers are expected to be in action at this year’s 43rd anniversary of the Tecate SCORE Baja 500, the original desert race produced by SCORE on July 26, 1974.
With late entries accepted up to race morning in the 454.69-mile race, entries so far have come from 25 U.S. States from Hawaii to New York and the U.S. Territory of Guam along with the additional countries of Mexico, Canada, Germany, Guatemala and Japan. The green flag will drop for the race at 6 a.m. on Saturday (June 4) for the motorcycle and ATV classes in the Tecate SCORE Baja 500, followed by the car and truck classes three hours after the last ATV at approximately 10 a.m. The elapsed-time race will start and finish in front of the Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center on Boulevard Costero in the heart of Ensenada, leaving and returning into the city through the Arroyo Wash.
The talented field of veteran desert racers heading to Baja includes 14 defending class winners out of the 25 Pro classes that had finishers in last year’s race.
Last year’s overall race champions are among the early entries in this year’s race.
The rugged 454.69-mile course is a very similar to the last three years, although it is about 16 miles longer and the terrain has changed because of natural weather patterns that impact both sides of the race course on the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez and in the middle in the summit section. The course, which runs in a clockwise direction, resembles a deflating balloon, winding east to Ojos Negros, down to near San Felipe, back West to the Pacific Ocean below San Vicente and back north east through Santo Tomas on the way back to Ojos Negros and then Ensenada.
“Without all of the immense and considerable help we have received from Mexican officials and ejidos, we would have had a very hard time finalizing a course for this year’s race,” said Sal Fish, SCORE CEO/President since soon after it was founded in 1974. “This year’s race will be another testament to the wonderful relationship SCORE enjoys with the government and the people of Baja California. The course includes a new section about seven miles long on the way to the summit that is rough, technical and very picturesque. Overall, the race will be another scenic test of man and machine providing many more colorful adventures of SCORE Baja racing which as we all know is unlike any other racing in the world.”
The only pre-running that will be allowed on the first 36.83 miles of the course will be outbound only and only on Thursday and Friday, June 2 and 3. No inbound pre-running on the last 36.83 miles of the course will be allowed. Pre-running of the rest of the course will start and finish in the Ojos Negros area.
The four official race checkpoints, where all vehicles are required to make a quick stop, will be located at race mile 92.30 (Santa Catarina), rm211.89 (Borrego), rm318.20 (Northwest of Colonet near the Pacific Ocean) and rm411.98 (West of Ojos Negros). The course will also have 36 virtual checkpoints. All vehicles are also required to run International Rally Consultants tracking devices and live vehicle tracking will be available during the race at IRC - International Racing Consultants.
The featured SCORE Trophy-Truck division for high-tech, 800-horsepower, unlimited production trucks has a race-high 28 entries in this year’s Tecate SCORE Baja 500.
Besides the three overall winners, the other defending Pro class champions in the Tecate SCORE Baja 500 entered this year to date are: Steve Appleton, Boise, Idaho (Class 1, Jimco-Chevy), Brian Wilson, Long Beach, Calif. (Class 1-2/1600, Kreger-VW), Dave Caspino, Woodland Hills, Calif. (Class 6, Ford Ranger); Dan Chamlee, Carpenteria, Calif. (Class 7, Ford Ranger); Kent Kroeker, Valley Center, Calif. (Class 8, Dodge Ram2500); Sergio Salgado, Mexicali, Mexico (Class 10, Jimco-VW); Steven Eugenio, Alpine, Calif./Adam Pfankuch, Carlsbad, Calif., (SCORE Lite, Prill-VW); Francisco Septien, Ensenada, Mexico (Class 30, Honda CRF450X); Jeff Kaplan, Thousand Oaks, Calif. (Class 40, Honda CRF450X) and Joe Rice, Lomita, Calif./Rob Ransford, Chicago (Class 26, Can-Am 4X4).
The Sportsman class winners returning from last year as of today are: Peter Lang, Santa Rosa, Calif. (SPT Car, Homebuilt-Buick) and Thomas Graves, El Cajon, Calif. (SPT UTV, Yamaha Rhino).
Rising Southern Nevada desert racing star Bryce Menzies along with Dan Martin, Shane Esposito and Roberto Ruiz all drew pole positions in their respective divisions during the April 23 computerized drawing for starting positions in the race. The draw was held at the SCORE headquarters in Los Angeles.
While late entries will be accepted up to race morning, as of the Start draw, the Pro 4-Wheel vehicles classes with the most entries are: SCORE Trophy-Truck (28), the unlimited Class 1 (26), and Class 1-2/1600 and SCORE Lite with 11 each.
Leading the Pro Motorcycle classes in entries so far are Class 22 (8).
Class 24 leads the Pro ATV classes with eight entries to date.
Among the Sportsman classes, SPT Motorcycles 450cc and over has the most with 19 entries.
For the fourth straight year and just the fourth time in the 43-year history of the Tecate SCORE Baja 500 desert race, the colorful pre-race Manufacturer’s Midway and Contingency, the start and finish line will all be located in the heart of Ensenada, Mexico on Boulevard Costero adjacent to the historic Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center. It will be the fourth time in race history that both the pre-race activities and the finish will be held on this historic boulevard.
The SCORE Manufacturer’s Midway will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, June 3 on Blvd Costero. Racer registration will again be held in the Grand Ballroom of the San Nicolas Hotel. Registration hours will be from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 2 and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday June 3.
The awards celebration will be held poolside at the San Nicolas Hotel on Sunday, June 5 at 11 a.m.
Last seven SCORE Trophy-Truck race winners among entries
For next week’s 43rd Tecate SCORE Baja 500 desert race

June 2-5 event in Ensenada has entries from 30 States, 7 countries; course map available

LOS ANGELES—Leading over 250 race vehicles into the Mexican desert during next weekend’s 43rd Annual Tecate SCORE Baja 500 will be 29 massive SCORE Trophy-Trucks and included in that field are the last seven race winners in the marquee SCORE racing division and nine of the 17 former race winners in the unique class for high-tech, 850 horsepower unlimited production trucks.
Created in 1994 by SCORE CEO/President Sal Fish, SCORE Trophy-Truck features the world’s best desert racers and the field this year includes the SCORE Trophy-Truck division winners from the last seven years—Alan Pflueger (2004), Robby Gordon (2005), Brian Collins (2006 and 2007), B.J. Baldwin (2008), Rick D. Johnson (2009) and Andy McMillin/Scott McMillin (2010). The two other SCORE Trophy-Truck winners in this race entered to date are Curt LeDuc (1995) and Rob MacCachren (1996).
As pre-running on the rugged 454.69-mile course continues in earnest this weekend for the second-oldest desert race in the world, Round 3 of the five-race 2011 SCORE Desert Series, the World’s Foremost Desert Racing Series, will feature over 250 entries, competing in 28 Pro and 7 Sportsman classes for cars, trucks, motorcycles and ATVs, June 2-5 in Ensenada, Mexico.
With late entries accepted up to race morning in the 454.69-mile race, entries so far have come from 30 U.S. States from Hawaii to New York and the U.S. Territory of Guam along with the additional countries of Mexico, Canada, Finland, Germany, Guatemala and Japan. The green flag will drop for the race at 6 a.m. next Saturday (June 4) for the motorcycle and ATV classes in the Tecate SCORE Baja 500, followed by the car and truck classes three hours after the last ATV at approximately 10 a.m. The elapsed-time race will start and finish in front of the Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center on Boulevard Costero in the heart of Ensenada, leaving and returning into the city through the Arroyo Wash. One vehicle will start every 30 seconds in the elapsed-time race.
“SCORE Trophy-Truck is an invention that we are extremely proud of at SCORE,” commented Fish, who has led SCORE since soon after it was founded in 1973. “This unique racing division showcases the greatest equipment, the most sophisticated technology and the most talented drivers in a sport that has always been the ultimate challenge of man and machine.
“These magnificent racing machines cost upwards of US$500,000 to build and reflect all of the passion and ingenuity of these marvelous racers and their passionate teams. This class is a true testament to the creativity and commitment of people who continue to stretch the boundaries of possibility and create new realities of human competition and development. We are humbled and honored to be able to provide a platform for all of these things to be displayed on an international stage.”
While the eight returning race winners provides a formidable field by themselves in SCORE Trophy-Truck, the field includes 16 drivers who have combined for 61 wins out of the 100 races the class has run in its 17-plus-year history.
Leading the group of SCORE Trophy-Truck race winners is all-time leader Tim Herbst of Las Vegas, who has 11 career race wins in the division and who will split driving in this year’s Tecate SCORE Baja 500 with Larry Roeseler, Boulevard, Calif., in the No. 19 Terrible Herbst Motorsports Ford F-150. Roeseler has 16 class wins in the Tecate SCORE Baja 500 including a race-record 11 overall wins and he also has three career SCORE Trophy-Truck race victories.
In addition to Tim Herbst and Roeseler, the other drivers who have at least one SCORE Trophy-Truck race win entered in next week’s race are: Gordon (nine career race wins), MacCachren (8), Collins (6), LeDuc and Andy McMillin (4 each), Baldwin (3), Jesse Jones, Scott McMillin, Roger Norman, Pflueger and Gus Vildosola Sr. (2 each) and single SCORE Trophy-Truck race winners Johnson, Bryce Menzies and Gus Vildosola Jr.
Among the SCORE Trophy-Truck entries are 12 of the 17 all-time season point champions in the division. Herbst (1999, 2000, 2002 and 2003) again leads the way with four career SCORE Trophy-Truck season point titles followed by two-time champions Baldwin (2006 and 2008) of Las Vegas and Gordon (1996 and 2009) of Charlotte, N.C. and MacCachren (1994 and 2007) of Las Vegas. The other former season SCORE Trophy-Truck champs entered in next week’s race are LeDuc (1997) of Cherry Valley, Calif. and Jones (2010) of Litchfield Park, Ariz.
Last year’s overall race champions are also among the entries in this year’s race. The overall 4-wheel winner in 2010 was the son/father team of Andy and Scott McMillin, National City, Calif., who drive the No. 31 Ford F-150 SCORE Trophy-Truck. Recording the fastest overall time while leading all motorcycles in last year’s race was the JCR Honda Racing Team riders Kendall Norman, Santa Barbara, Calif./Quinn Cody, Buellton, Calif., on a Honda CRF450X while the fastest ATV was the Honda TRX700X riding by Wayne Matlock/Josh Caster, El Cajon, Calif./Wes Miller, Los Angeles.
“This year’s course will be another unique singular challenge just like people always expect in SCORE Baja races,” said Fish. “SCORE with the help of the city of Ensenada has even sent heavy equipment to a remote new section of the course near the summit by Santa Catarina to help widen it and rework what was already there to make it more drivable for the race itself.”
While late entries will be accepted up to race morning, as of the Start draw, the Pro 4-Wheel vehicles classes with the most entries are: SCORE Trophy-Truck (29), the unlimited Class 1 (26), and Class 1-2/1600 (14) and SCORE Lite (11).
Leading the Pro Motorcycle classes in entries so far is Class 22 (9).
Class 24 leads the Pro ATV classes with 11 entries to date.
Among the Sportsman classes, SPT Motorcycles 450cc and over has the most with 23 entries.

LOS ANGELES— Southern California’s Larry Roeseler, the all-time winningest active racer in all of desert racing, enters this week’s 43rd Annual Tecate SCORE Baja 500 with 16 class wins, including 11 overall victories in this race. Roeseler will pace over 250 vehicles expected entries, including 82 racers who have combined for 191 class wins in this popular summer classic.
Round 3 of the five-race 2011 SCORE Desert Series, the World’s Foremost Desert Racing Series, will feature over 250 entries, competing in 28 Pro and 7 Sportsman classes for cars, trucks, motorcycles and ATVs, Saturday and Sunday in Ensenada, Mexico.
SCORE is in its 38th year as the world’s foremost desert racing organization. This race is traditionally one of the most popular events on the SCORE schedule, and most of the world’s best desert racers are expected to be in action at this year’s 43rd anniversary of the Tecate SCORE Baja 500, the original desert race produced by SCORE on July 26, 1974.
With late entries accepted up to race morning in the 454.69-mile race, entries so far have come from 30 U.S. States from Hawaii to New York and the U.S. Territory of Guam along with the additional countries of Mexico, Canada, Finland, Germany, Guatemala and Japan. The green flag will drop for the race at 6 a.m. on Saturday for the motorcycle and ATV classes in the Tecate SCORE Baja 500, followed by the car and truck classes three hours after the last ATV at approximately 10 a.m. Vehicles will start in 30-second intervals in the elapsed-time race and will start and finish in front of the Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center on Boulevard Costero in the heart of Ensenada, leaving and returning into the city through the Arroyo Wash. All vehicles will have a 23-hour time limit from the time each starts to become and official finisher, but the fastest vehicles are expected to finish in approximately nine hours.
Roeseler, 54, who has returned to Boulevard, Calif., in his native San Diego area after living several years in Hesperia and Huntington Beach, is listed as the second driver this year for both the Tim Herbst and Troy Herbst Ford F-150 SCORE Trophy-Trucks. Running the three SCORE Baja races last year and this, Roeseler and Tim Herbst finished 10th in SCORE Trophy-Truck, the marquee SCORE racing division for high-tech, 850-horsepower, unlimited production trucks in the No. 19 Terrible Herbst Motorsports Monster Energy Ford F-150 in March’s MasterCraft Safety Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250.
“It is an honor that I cherish dearly to be able to race with such an incredible team like Terrible Herbst Motorsports and to be able to do it twice in my career is nothing short of amazing,” said Roeseler, who said he is prepared to drive in either one or both of the Terrible Herbst SCORE Trophy-Trucks as needed. “I have always been committed to significant prerunning and I can promise you that this will be one of the toughest, most technical SCORE Baja races I have ever had the pleasure to race in all my years in the sport.”
Besides the legendary SCORE Baja racer Malcolm Smith, Roeseler is the only active competitor in this race who has won the overall title in both a four-wheel vehicle and on a motorcycle. Roeseler’s incredible SCORE Baja racing record for the three races SCORE produces annually in Mexico has him with 39 class wins including 26 overall victories. Roeseler has 11 career SCORE season class point titles.
In the Tecate SCORE Baja 500 his 11 overall wins (nine on motorcycles and two in 4-wheel) are the most in race history. His 16 career class wins in this race are third all-time behind semi-retired Rod Hall’s 18 and retired Ivan Stewart’s 17.
After running parts of two seasons as a second driver in SCORE Trophy-Truck with Roger Norman, Roeseler has returned to Terrible Herbst Motorsports. Roeseler has three career SCORE Trophy-Truck race wins, including two with Norman. Roeseler’s two Tecate SCORE Baja 500 overall 4-wheel victories came in 2002 and 2003 as the second driver for Troy Herbst in the unlimited Class 1.
Tim Herbst is the all-time SCORE Trophy-Truck race winner with 11 career race wins in the featured SCORE racing division. Troy Herbst has seven Class 1 race wins in this race.
The SCORE Manufacturer’s Midway and SCORE Coningency will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, on Blvd Costero. Racer registration will again be held in the Grand Ballroom of the San Nicolas Hotel. Registration hours will be from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursdayand from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday.
The awards celebration will be held poolside at the San Nicolas Hotel on Sunday, June 5 at 11 a.m.
Besides Roeseler, the other racers entered this year with the most class wins in this race are: Jim O’Neal (13), Steve Hengeveld, Troy Herbst and Arnoldo Ramirez (7 each), Scott McMillin, Donald Moss and Nick Vanderwey (6 each), Johnny Campbell, Dan Chamlee, Rick D. Johnson and Rob MacCachren (5 each) and Robby Gordon, Jeff Kaplan and Kendall Norman (4 each).
The racers entered with three career class wins in the Tecate SCORE Baja 500 are: Brian Collins Jim Dizney, Mike Julson, Adam Pfankuch, Greg Row and Hector Sarabia.
Including last year, the overall race winners returning are 16 drivers who have combined to win 14 overall car/truck titles and 26 riders who have combined to win 19 overall motorcycle titles, including drivers and riders from the last nine 4-wheel overalls and 12 of the last 14 motorcycle overall winners.
The only pre-running that will be allowed on the first 36.83 miles of the course will be outbound only and only this Thursday and Friday. No inbound pre-running on the last 36.83 miles of the course is allowed. Pre-running of the rest of the course starts and finishes in the Ojos Negros area.
While late entries will be accepted up to race morning, the Pro 4-Wheel vehicles classes with the most entries are: SCORE Trophy-Truck (29), the unlimited Class 1 (26), and Class 1-2/1600 (15) and SCORE Lite (11).
Leading the Pro Motorcycle classes in entries so far is Class 22 (9).
Class 24 leads the Pro ATV classes with 11 entries to date.
Among the Sportsman classes, SPT Motorcycles 450cc and over has the most with 23 entries.
Racers are also competing for the annual SCORE Off-Roadsman of the Year awards, including the MasterCraft Safety SCORE Rookie of the Year award.
Current SCORE official annual sponsors are: BFGoodrich Tires-official tire, Volkswagen of America-official vehicle, Sunoco Race Fuels -official fuel supplier, Bilstein-official shock, Instant Mexico Auto Insurance-official Mexican auto insurance and Slime-official tire sealant. Associate sponsors are: Tecate Beer, Coca-Cola of Mexico, Las Vegas Events, Blue C Advertising, SignPros, P.C.I. Race Radios, McKenzie’s Performance Products and Advanced Color Graphics.
While Tecate is title sponsor of the 43rd Tecate SCORE Baja 500, additional race sponsors are the Office of the Secretary of Tourism of Baja California and ProTurismo de Ensenada.

Eugenio/Pfankuch win Class 1 at 43rd Tecate SCORE Baja 500

Norman/Cody earn Honda’s 16th overall motorcycle title with 30-second win over JCR teammates;
Brown and team capture overall ATV victory for the second time in last three years

ENSENADA, Mexico—Starting first and never looking back, Las Vegas’ Bryce Menzies won his second SCORE race of the year Saturday earning the overall 4-wheel vehicle and SCORE Trophy-Truck victory in the 43rd annual Tecate SCORE Baja 500. Menzies blasted his way over 452.84 miles of Mexico’s blistering Baja California desert in the No. 70 Menzies Motorsports Ford F-150 in a winning time of nine hours, four minutes, 52 seconds, averaging 49.87 miles per hour.
Following data tracking review of the vehicles, fellow Las Vegan Rob MacCachren was declared second and Andy McMillin, National City, Calif., third. MacCachren finished in 9:17:25, 12:33 behind Menzies. McMillin finished in 9:18:01. MacCachren, who won March’s MasterCraft Safety Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 drove the No. 20 MasterCraft Safety Racing Ford F-150 while McMillin, the overall winner in this race last year with his father Scott McMillin, soloed this year in the No. 31 McMillin Realty Ford F-150. All three podium finishers recorded penalty-free races.
Round 3 of the five-race 2011 SCORE Desert Series, the World’s Foremost Desert Racing Series saw 254 starters competing in 28 Pro and 7 Sportsman classes for cars, trucks, motorcycles and ATVs, Saturday and Sunday in Ensenada, Mexico. SCORE is in its 38th year as the world’s foremost desert racing organization.
Entries came from 30 U.S. States from Hawaii to New York and the U.S. Territory of Guam along with the additional countries of Mexico, Canada, Finland, Germany, Guatemala Italy and Japan.
With racing continuing in the elapsed-time race that had a 23-hour time limit until 10:20 a.m. Pacific Time Sunday, both the start and the finish line were located in the heart of Ensenada, Mexico on Boulevard Costero adjacent to the historic Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center. It was the fourth straight year that both the pre-race activities and the finish were all held on this historic boulevard. SCORE officials released the official results following complete data tracking review Sunday morning after the course closed.
The total number of starters (254) was tied for the 24th highest total with 1991 in the 43-year history of the popular race. The starting list included 160 cars and trucks and 94 motorcycles and ATVs. The total of 160 finishers is the 14th-most number finishers in the event’s 43-year history, for a tremendous 62.99 percent finishing rate.
Johnny Campbell Racing gave American Honda the top two overall motorcycle finishing positions as Kendall Norman, Santa Barbara, Calif. and Quinn Cody gave Honda its 16th overall motorcycle victory in the Tecate SCORE Baja 500 and 15th straight title with their winning time of 8:47:07 at 51.76 mph on a JCR Honda CRF450X. After data tracking review was completed in the elapsed-time race, they beat the twin Honda CRF450X of teammates defeated teammates Colton Udall, San Clemente, Calif., and Dave Kamo, Caldwell Idaho, by exactly 10 minutes as Udall/Kamo received time penalties for violations. Their times were the fastest of all vehicles on the course.
It was the second straight overall Tecate SCORE Baja 500 race win for Norman and Cody. Norman now has five career race wins in this event in the last six years. It was the second triumph for Cody. Udall was teamed with Kamo for the first time as Johnny Campbell Racing dedicated the race to the memory of Udall’s former teammate Jeff Kargola, who died recently following a motorcycle riding accident in Baja. In Saturday’s race, the two JCR Honda vehicles actually crossed the finish line together, before Norman/Cody were declared official winners on Sunday morning. Udall and Norman were on their respective bikes at the finish.
Finishing fourth overall and in SCORE Trophy-Truck was Nick Vanderwey, Phoenix/Curt LeDuc, Cherry Valley, Calif., with a time of 9:25:09 in the No. 84 Flying Dutchmen Racing Chevy Silverado.
Completing the top five overall 4-wheel vehicles and fifth in SCORE Trophy-Truck was the brother team of Gary and Mark Weyhrich, Troutedale, Oregon, with a time of 9:26:59 in their No. 98 TSCO Motorsports Ford F-150.
Winning the Overall ATV title and Class 24 was the team of Brandon Brown, Umatilla, Ore./Jorie Williams, Longview, Wash./Kenny Sanford, Tacoma, Wash./Robbie Mitchell, Price, Utah/Christopher Kristensen, Vancouver, Wash., who worked together on their Honda TRX450R to cover the course in11:05:34, averaging 40.82mph.
In his rookie season racing with SCORE, Menzies, 23, opened the season by winning the SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge in January and backed that up with a sixth-place finish in March’s MasterCraft Safety Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 before his second SCORE Trophy-Truck victory Saturday. His first SCORE race was last year’s Tecate SCORE Baja 500 where he finished seventh.
“The crew did an awesome job,” commented Menzies after the race. “Every time I was in the pit it was just 30 or 40 seconds. When I got up to Borrego I made one mistake and hit a huge rock and we thought we broke a caliper off the truck but we stopped and checked it out. It was good so we kept going. Our goal is to win the championship this year.”
“This win gives us a huge jump on the points. I didn't have one flat all day long. Not bent rims, no nothing. I was down here pre-running for close to two weeks so I think that paid off huge. I couldn't be happier than I am right now. We've been doing a lot of testing with the truck and it is showing. The summit was real rocky but we just cruised over it and got to Borrego and let it fly from there.”
Menzies’ win was also the 28th overall 4-wheel victory win in this race for BFGoodrich Tires. He defeating an impressive field of 28 starters Saturday in the marquee SCORE Trophy-Truck division for high-tech, 850-horsepower unlimited production trucks.
Tenth overall among 4-wheel vehicles and eighth in SCORE Trophy-Truck was NASCAR Cup team owner/driver Robby Gordon, Charlotte, N. C. in the No. 77 Robby Gordon Motorsports Hummer H3. Gordon’s vehicle was his Dakar Rally truck it was the first time he drove it in a SCORE race while his normal desert truck is a Chevy CK1500.
Earning his second straight top 10 finish in SCORE Trophy-Truck was reality TV star Jesse James, Austin, Texas, in the No. 54 Chevy Silverado. James was also 13th overall. In San Felipe, James finished eighth overall and in SCORE Trophy-Truck.
Winning the unlimited Class 1 and finishing seventh overall among 4-wheel vehicles was the talented team of Steven Eugenio, Alpine, Calif./Adam Pfankuch, Oceanside, Calif., in their debut race in a new Chevy-powered Jimco open-wheel desert race car. The pair won earlier this year in San Felipe in the SCORE Lite class.
Justin Matney, Bristol, Tenn., and Clyde Stacy, Bristol, Va., continued their stellar seasons Saturday. Matney won Class 8 in a Chevy Silverado for the second time this season and Class 11 in a stock VW Sedan for the second time as well in three races. Stacy remained undefeated with his third straight victory in Class 4 in a PSD-Chevy and also finished 18th in SCORE Trophy-Truck in a Chevy Silverado.
Also winning their third consecutive races in the 2011 SCORE Desert Series were Elias Hanna, Ensenada, Mexico (Class 7SX, Ford Ranger) and Jessica McMillin, National City, Calif. (Protruck, Ford F-150. Hanna is the defending SCORE season point champion in Class 7SX while McMillin is in her first season in Protruck.
Other car and truck class winners included: Jessica McMillin’s cousin Luke McMillin, El Cajon, Calif. (Class 1-2/1600, AlumiCraft-VW), Rafael Navarro IV, Temecula, Calif. Winning their respective motorcycle and ATV classes for the second of three SCORE Baja races here were the teams led by: Wayne Matlock, El Cajon, Calif., (Class 25, Honda TRX700XX, Francisco Septien, Ensenada, Mexico (Class 30, Honda CRF450X), Jeff Kaplan, Thousand Oaks, Calif. (Class 40, Honda CRF450X), Trevor Insley, San Clemente, Calif. (Class 21, Honda CRF450X), Jim Dizney, Alpine, Calif. (Class 50, Honda CRF450X), Donald Lewis, Marlborough, Conn. (Class 60, Honda CRF450X) and Carl Vela, Ardsley, N.Y. (Class 26, Can-Am Outlander800).
It was the second win of the year for Udall, Dizney, Lewis and Brown.
The rugged 452.84-mile course was a very similar to the last three years, although it is about 14 miles longer and the terrain has changed because of natural weather patterns that impact both sides of the race course on the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez and in the middle in the summit section. The course, which runs in a clockwise direction, resembled a deflating balloon, winding east to Ojos Negros, down to near San Felipe, back West to the Pacific Ocean below San Vicente and back north east through Santo Tomas on the way back to Ojos Negros and then Ensenada.
In addition to season class point championships, the racers also competed for part of the nearly $400,000 in cash purse and contingency postings each race. Drivers in the Pro car and truck classes are attempting to earn prestigious SCORE Toyota Milestone Awards given to all car and truck class drivers who complete every required mile of the five-race season. Being presented by Toyota Motorsports for the 26th consecutive year, a total of 31 drivers remain eligible after Round 3 of the 2011 SCORE Desert Series. Racers also competed for the annual SCORE Off-Roadsman of the Year awards, including the MasterCraft Safety SCORE Rookie of the Year award.
Round 4 of the five-race 2011 SCORE Desert Series will be the 16th SCORE Las Vegas Terrible’s Primm 300 on Sept. 10-12 in Primm, Nev.

Hey Joey any word on How Brenda Johnson is doing. I heard on the radio (Weatherman) she was involved in a traffic collision with some locals. She was flown out by chopper with some head injuries. :(

Don't want to speak for JD, but from what I have heard, she is stateside at UCSD hospital in ICU in stable condition. Lots of people are sending her positive thoughts and prayers on RDC.
