“PURE” UTV SERIES NO LONGER REGIONAL
California City, CA – March 5, 2016 – Entries just opened and
AVE/BAJA PROMOTIONS reports a plethora of racers who continue to come from all over the western states and making their way to the next
PURE UTV OFF-ROAD DESERT SERIES event – The PURE “125” – March 19, 2016, at the Alta Vista Ranch, California City, CA.
This time, racers will meet a brand new course that for the most part has not been used for at least three years, according to race director, Alan Bell. Bell stated, “I think that with the exception of the various routes we use to go out of our property and come back in, the rest of the 21-mile course is, for the most part, new to those who will be racing. It was new to me in certain sections that we have not used at all. I don’t know how Lou finds them but he does and surprises me.”
The Lou who Bell is referring to is the consummate race promoter, who eats, sleeps and spends most of his days thinking up of totally unique and challenging race courses within the 203-square miles that is California City. This time, AVE/Baja Promotions has chosen a somewhat fast and “tasty” (according to Lou), course that will just “knock the socks off of you.”
Here is the way Lou Peralta, race promoter/director, put it: “I thought about using a good portion of this course last year and decided to keep it in the closet for the right time. This is the right time with a 21-mile course. It will give you everything you want. The start and the finish areas are going to be tough, and I hope racers don’t get too ‘
pis…off’ at me. I do it with a purpose. I believe that nerves and expectations are always high just before the strat of any race. To give racers a fast course right off the bat is rather dangerous. I’ve been around for years to see where the mistakes are made. This course will test your mettle, that of your UTV, and will sort things out quickly when you’re not that from your pits. In other words, I want racers to start and get warmed up, really warmed up before they get to the fast and delicious stuff.”
This
PURE “125” is comprised of six (6) 21-mile laps. Why 21-miles? Lou mentioned that “…racers like even numbers of laps, especially when they have a co-driver who shares the costs and driving. We were going to make it a 24.6-mile course, consisting of five laps but at the end Alan and I decided to make it a neat 21-mile package and make everyone happy.”
Those who have entered so far (and they range from places such as Iowa, Montana, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada and Northern and Southern California, so far) will get the GPS files of the course to begin pre-running the week of March 11-13, and again the weekend of the race which is March 18-20. Pre-running is on Friday, March 18 from Noon until 5 p.m. Check-in and Registration, also at the Start/Finish, is on Friday from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m.
Very, very late sign-ups are on race day, March 19, from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. Unfortunately, those who are late must add
$100.00 to their entry fee. A mandatory
Driver’s Meeting is set up for 9 a.m. and “Staging” begins at 8:30 a.m. on a “
FIRST-COME-FIRST-SERVE” Basis! This is new to the Series and according to Race Director Bell and Peralta, “We had to do it. Last time, racers who know the drill, still were late when they were supposed to be staged.” This time, added Bell, “There will be only one entrance to the scoring and “staging” chute and the only way to get lined up, no matter what class you are racing, is to be there on time. Once the staging is set we will assign individual starting times, exactly when you start.”
The second event in the GPS-based Series will start at 10 a.m., Saturday, March 19. Free camping overnight to racers and just $10 per vehicle to others. Only pit vehicles are allowed to park next to the race course. All others must park behind their respective vehicles.
What is GPS-Based? Simply, this year racers are encouraged to get a good “Navigator” to help with the course. For the most part, the course will be void of the expected ribbons and arrows. The idea is to allow racer and navigator to work in concert during the race, using a GPS unit. By doing so, the team now is made up of two very important people; the “Driver” and the “Navigator.” A number of racers after the January event commented that they had driven better than they can remember because they concentrated solely on the course and followed the precise directions of the navigator. That was the idea behind the GPS-Based Series.
Al classes will negotiate a 21-mile course and complete six laps to become and official finisher. Points are also awarded to Driver, Co-Driver and Navigator(s). Everyone gets points towards the end of the year Points Championship Banquet.
The 2016 PURE UTV OFF-ROAD DESERT SERIES consists of six events, from which the top five finishers in points by race are used to compete for the Overall and Class Championships. All races will be in Southern California, primarily in California City, CA at the Alta Vista Ranch. Although we have been informed that there may be a mid-year surprise of a different race location. Nothing official as yet.
Dates for the PURE UTV Series are as follows:
PURE #3 – April 23;
PURE #4 –July 16 (night race);
PURE #5 – September 10; and
PURE #6 – October 22 (a double points race).
