Costs UTV sportsman Class - Baja 1000

Hey Everyone!,

I am from Edmonton, AB Canada and am trying to get an idea of how much it would cost to race in the UTV sportsman class in the Baja 1000. Basically I am trying to get an Idea of the cost to put together a sportsman UTV, and general costs of racing down in the baja 1000. Any help would be much appreciated!

For baja costs, I'd figure about $15,000 depending on your crew numbers. This year is point to point so it might cost a bit more since you have to go all the way down and come back.

The basic costs for the 500:

Registration- $1775
Driver registration $75 x 2 minimum- $150
Tracker - $290
Transponder (if you don't already have one- $80
Mexican Insurance runs about $100-$150 Per vehicle- ?

You can probably make a vehicle legal to race for around $10,000, Then you will need legal helmets, Driving suits, You have to have a GPS and will need to equip your race car and all chase trucks with race radios. The race car is going to take about $200 in fuel for the race and depending on the chase trucks at least the same for each one. You will need to figure what it will cost you to get your team down there. You will need some spare parts and some equipment for your chase trucks. For the Mexico races you will need extra light for the race car and I recommend extra lights for the chase trucks as well.
Lodging in Ensenada is not too bad but our rooms at the Marina Hotel last year were $200 a night and it is not the Ritz for sure.

Your first race is going to come in way over $15000 if you include making the car race legal. If you have questions about building a SCORE legal UTV feel free to PM me and I will be happy to talk to you about it.
