“BLACK RHINO SPONSORED DRIVER JAMES HILL AND THE #91 XP1000 TAKE 3RD PLACE AT TERRACROSS â€

09/11/13 El Cajon, CA –“What a week! Monday morning starts with a call from my friend Dana Creech who is looking for a few more cars for a Terracross event in Minnesota. Without knowing anything I agreed to be there. At this point the only details I get are, fly to Minnesota and race the new XP1000 in a spec class. Seeing a sport I am so passionate about on TV there is no way I can let this one pass me by.

For the next few hours I attempt to line up any type of sponsorship I can. It takes great partners to pull this off with only 5 days’ notice. With the help of UTVUnderground’s Rusty Baptist we manage to pull the right strings and got some much needed help from Kryptonight Industries and Black Rhino. For the first time in my racing career I was not spending long hours prepping my race car; I was booking flights and hotels. My pre-race checklist did not have any tools, spare parts or tires. It was hard to get a handle on the fact I was flying to Minnesota to race a car I had never driven in a series I had never raced without any tools.

Due to life and logistics Rusty and I were not able to fly out until late Friday night. Some bad weather delayed our flight. We hit the ground in Minnesota and the Mad Media boys had us covered with a ride from the airport to our hotel around 2am. Needless to say Saturday morning came quick. Our hotel was about 40 mins or 200 lakes away from the event. Terracross would host their race in the middle of Haydays. This event is massive. An estimated 40,000 people would attend over 2 days.

Coming from racing a CAN Am Maverick all season I got comfortable quick in the XP1000. One lap into the first qualifier I had it crossed up and on its lid. After being righted I managed to get a few decent laps in but was still set to sit in the back row for the first heat. When the flag dropped it was game on, a six pack of cars smashing in an arena packed with multiple lines. Passing without contact was almost impossible. I ended up 7th out of 18. As racing on Saturday came to a close we found ourselves at the FOX pit party with the boys from UTVUnderground. We wrapped the night up and were ready for battle on Sunday.

The main events would be held on Sunday. This is the TV portion of the show. Sunday would consist of one heat and two main events. Due to a clutch failure in LCQ 1 we did not make the first main. In the second main I was set back in the third row surrounded by some of the most competitive guys involved in our sport. By the second lap I managed to get myself into a 4th position and then we had a red flag due to RJ Anderson breaking his car out. With RJ out my mindset kicked into getting myself on the podium. So far the weekend had taken a toll on me and my equipment. After the restart I could feel that my car no longer had 4wd. At this point in the race everyone’s machine had taken a beating. For the next 6 laps I would battle for 2nd place. In the end I took the checkers in 3rd. All in all I was super stoked to be on the podium representing the west coast and my great sponsors. Minnesota was great; the next round is in Las Vegas during SEMA.†~ James Hill #91 XP1000
