07/19/13 El Cajon, CA – Round 4 of the Lucas Oil Regional Off Road Series Southern California took place this last weekend, Saturday, July 13, 2013 at the Glen Helen Raceway. The event took place under the lights.

BRYAN OSBORN #854 SR1

The #854 didn’t race this last weekend but none the less it was a successful weekend. “This was a great weekend; we have been going out to the past couple of rounds to do some research and development work on some new products we are building. This weekend told us what needed to be done to get us close to finishing up with an ignition we are working on.” Osborn said.

ROGER DIAZ #785 RZR

I had quite the adventure getting a bent frame fixed at the last second Thursday and Friday along with many other problems but everything by some miracle came together just in time for qualifying on saturday and I was able to qualify 7th! I was so excited after being so exhausted wrenching on it all week it finally felt like it was all worth it. The main went great I tried to focus on running my pace and not making any huge mistakes. Other than one bad restart I stayed pretty consistent and finished 6th! My best finish so far in my rookie year!

I would like to give a huge thank you to IMG Motorsports for all the last minute fab work to straighten my steering out. Makin Trax Suspension for the great new shock package that worked excellent! STEVE “WHEELS” BUCARO #69 PILOT

Okay. This was the best race ever! First Lee Perfect allowed me to race with the XP900's and Adult Trophy Karts. Second I had Bryan Osborn as my crew chief and spotter! It could not have gone any better! He is awesome and the best person to have in your ear. In the heat race we ran to see how the car was feeling, and how crazy the XP's would be. Got some pretty good times, but still being smallest started the main in last place. But with Bryan spotting I wasnt going to finish there!!!! The main event was chaotic to say the least. But with some driving skill and Bryan in my ear we managed to be close but miss everything! I had some great battles the whole race and beat some of those XP's hands down!!! I thank everyone in the Black Rhino/Racer X pit. My family, Brad for the food and all the fans who push me made this the best weekend of my racing career yet! The intense battles were the absolute most fun and skill testing of anything I've ever done. I hope everytime I race Bryan is spotting for me and I will never finish last!!!! Thank you Bryan, Jesse, Frosty, Steve, Andrea, and all my family and sponsors!!!!! I think I was like 8th or 9th overall outta the whole group, and first in the Pilot class.

Gary Thompson finished this weekend’s race in 2nd place and sits 1st in points in the Weller Racing SR1 class.

CODY RAHDERS #716 XP900/#16 PROLITE

At Round 4 of the Lucas Oil Regional Series Cody Rahders in the Polaris/UTVunderground.com/Magnum Off Road/Fox XP900 finished the main in 3rd place, and on 3 wheels.

The July 13th race date proved to be difficult as both WORCS and the Lucas Oil Regional Series were scheduled for the same day. The decision was made that Cody, since he was tied for points in the XP class, would concentrate on racing the Polaris XP at the Regional’s along with his Black Rhino/RacerX Motorsports/Superchips/Toyo Tires Prolite, and substitute driver Joey DiGiovanni would be lined up to race the Polaris/Cognito Motorsports /UTVunderground/Fox RZR570 at WORCS.

With 3 vehicles to prep and 34 days to do it in the following took place; complete frame change on the WORCS RZR570, prep, repaint and wrap the XP900 (thank you Fox Shox) and another 200 hours of labor into the ProLite upgrading the power steering and fuel system, repairing the instrumentation, reconfiguring the cooling system, chassis fabrication, then wrapping it all in new tin work (Thank you SFI Designs) it was a very busy month.

In the XP class Cody qualified 3rd then started row three inside and managed to move into 2nd place where he stayed for the next 13 laps. On the last lap Cody made a clean pass on the leader in turn four to take over first and pull a 2-3 car lead going into to turn five only to have the former leader use Cody’s car for the apex of his turn taking him to the wall and then motor on to the win.

Cody was able to regroup and to get his XP down the front straight and across the finish line on three wheels dragging the left front along in the process to finish 3rd.

In the Pro Open class Cody qualified 4th in a field of 17 then for the main, started in 6th and worked his way into 3rd when his right rear tire blew on lap 7 forcing him out of the race.

"We took a chance and ran some old practice tires and saved our good tires for the National in a couple of weeks, I guess you can only run them about 12 times at ProLite speed before they let go huh?..."
And the WORCS RZR570? JoeyD brought it home in 4th place, JoeyD is now the official substitute driver for Cody Rahders. How do you feel about ProLite Joey?

JESSICA MORGAN #876 SR1

The race this weekend was an amazing next step for me and my Black Rhino Racer X Motorsports, Inc. Sr1! Even though I was not in the podium points I still managed to make a new best lap time for myself knocking 4 seconds off my fast lap from qualifying. I drove faster than I ever have before and it felt so exhilarating! You know it’s a good time when as soon as you make it through the checkered you want to do it again! After 1 season and 2 races I feel like I have gained so much knowledge and passion for this sport.

On Friday night my clutch went out so thanks to Frosty and a few hands from around the pits the SR1 #876 was race ready by morning. Now for my speed; Every time I get in my Sr1 I am dropping a second or two off my time and that is an amazing feeling. I could not do this if it wasn’t for my amazing and supporting family, my crew chief Kenny Frost who puts his heart into my racing and works with me through all my racing challenges, my sponsors who are always getting me what I need to do my best. I also want to thank the Cody Rahders Racing team for their words of wisdom and all their support and Lucas Oil for such an amazing event! It was great to see the safety crew always on point throughout the night. I want Thank Brad Liffick for his amazing food. To the entire Black Rhino Race team thank you for making every race great memories and good times, we have such a solid group of people together that truly make this an amazing team.

Wayne Matlock Round #4 Lucas Oil Regional Series Race Report

This last weekend was the fourth round of the Lucas Oil Regional Series. I went into the weekend pretty excited about the race. It would be my first short course race at night under the lights and I knew that I would feel comfortable at night because that was always my favorite time to race in Baja. We got to the track later than normal on Friday because of the night race schedule. Once we got all setup and through tech inspection, I had a little work to do. Lucky for me, I had Mike from Racer X on hand to help me install my new Crash Addict billet tie rods and align the car. After we finished that project, Mike and I looked over the chassis and made some changes with the car setup. At about 4:30pm it was time to go out and practice. My first two practice sessions were ok but I made some more changes and went out for the last session that was under the lights. Finally I had the Maverick working great and I was able to drive the thing like I wanted. I had more fun in the car than I ever had before and was able to make several passes on guys that were faster than me on previous races. After that we left the car alone and we were ready for the next day.

Saturday was pretty relaxing with the night race schedule. We did not qualify until about 3:30pm so I tinkered with the car and checked over all the nuts and bolts. When it was time I headed over to staging and pulled in behind my long time friend and fellow Maverick racer Steve Beilman. We sat in staging for a little while then they sent us out there with all of the SR1s in front of us. We get six laps to qualify and they take our best lap, so I always use the first couple of laps to find a grove in the track. Going into the third lap I felt pretty confident and went for it. I sucked up to Beilman and was feeling good about my speed then a yellow flag came out and ruined that lap. With the yellow flag out, I fell back from Beilman and waited for the green. When we went green again I knew if I could gain on him just a little I would have a fast qualifying time because he always runs hard. We got two more laps in and I felt really good about them. The car was working great.
When I pulled back into the pit I knew I had done well by the smile on my wife’s face. She told me that I set the fastest lap and I looked good. She also told me that the Maverick looked better than it ever has so far.

Now we just had to sit around and wait for the race. As it was getting closer to the race I was getting pretty excited. This race I would not only have Steve Beilman and Dave Nagy to bang wheels with but Greg Row and Robert Vanbeekom decided to race with us instead of the WORCS race at Pala. So I knew the competition would be steep.
We were set to race about 8:30pm. When it was time I headed over to staging. When I got there they put us in the new starting order. They inverted the top four qualifiers so instead of starting on the pole I would start on the outside of the second row. We went out on the track following all of the SR1s and Robert Vanbeekom did a great job giving us a gap behind the SR1s so we would not all stack up in the first turn. When the pace car pulled off the track we did one more parade lap then once we came back around the green flag waved and it was on. I was off to a good start and we were all stacked up through the first couple of turns. I came through the first few rollers and the car was working awesome so I made the 180 degree turn and left the throttle on going through the next set of rollers and was gaining ground. I went to throw it into the next turn and was trying to cut under Beilman and then all of the sudden the car straightened up and I knew something was wrong. I asked Mike my spotter if he could see anything but he could not get a look at the car. So I limped it off the track and there was a course worker there telling me to shut it down. I asked him what was wrong, he said he was not sure but it did not look good. So that was it. I was done and had to sit there and wait for the tow truck to put a hook on me and drag me back to the pits. When I got back to the pits I found out that I broke the right rear stub axle.
So now I am in the process of finding something a bit stronger so I will not have this problem again. I am looking forward to the next race. I have a couple of setups I want to try before the next race just to see if we can make this thing even faster. Friday July 5th Practice Day:

I ordered new shocks and Bob & Diane Bell at Precision Concepts Racing made sure they were on the car and ready to go. I had to drive up Friday to pick up my car at their shop in Riverside, so I could replace the front axle and rotor. Thank goodness they let me work in their shop as it was really hot and I needed help getting the bolts out of the rotor. Their knowledgeable staff jumped right in and got me going. Practice was another challenge as the RZR was overheating and going into limp mode. I was afraid I blew another head gasket and thought my race was over before it got started. I know I don’t need to tell you all this but, I was bummed.

Saturday July 6th Race Day:

It’s hard to describe what racing in the Lucas Oil Regional Off Road Series - SoCal is like but I can tell you this, IT’s A BLAST! I'm so lucky to be able to do this with my good friends and family.

“It’s On!” Race Time:

I started 6th out of 8 cars and as the flag dropped, I've got the pedal to the metal! Mud flying in my face, the sound of motors roaring and it’s on! Tires are rubbing, cars flying through the air and there is carnage everywhere. I'm in 5th, 4th, 3rd… Man, is this shit fun! I’m getting into my groove and I’m looking at taking down 2nd place when my engine starts to overheat... Crap, now I just want to finish! Yellow flag! Thank God... The engine cools to 225 degrees, she's running hot, green flag drops and I was sleeping at the wheel, giving 2nd a gap. DAMN, I’m not close enough. 2nd takes a huge jump. Won't let that happen again... Gaining, I can take him. Ohhh no, Overheating! Crap, come on baby! Just make it... Please just make it... White flag, one more lap... Crap, overheating... Aaahhhhhh, go girl. One more lap. Please one more... CHECKERED flag, YES!!!! 3rd place, I'll take it! AWESOME race!
